9th annual SYA Cardinal Cup to feature more than 150 teams
By Jimmy LaRoue
The 9th annual SYA Cardinal Cup will feature more than 150 boys’ and girls’ teams as it takes the field this weekend in the Centreville/Clifton area of northern Virginia.
The tournament includes 20 teams from the Richmond Strikers, who are coming up to Northern Virginia for the tournament, put on by the Southwestern Youth Association.
“This is a natural fit for two strong clubs to get together at a great event.” tournament director Steve Lovgren said on the tournament website. “The Cardinal Cup continues to grow and attract teams to the SYA name and brand. From the top down, we are succeeding at providing high quality for all our teams and events. We are glad to have the Richmond Strikers be a part of this quality tournament.”
Games will take place in boys’ Under-9 through U-19 age groups and girls’ U-12 through U-16 age groups Saturday and Sunday, taking place at seven locations, including Bull Run Park, Draper Park, Greenbrier Park, Kincheloe Park, Long Park, Poplar Tree Park and SYA Sports Park.
Most of the participating teams are from northern and central Virginia, with a smattering of teams from Maryland and one from Canada.
