PWSI Icebreaker tournament kicks off in Prince William County, Va. this weekend

By Jimmy LaRoue

Prince William Soccer’s Icebreaker Tournament will kick off across Prince William County, Va. this weekend with boys’ Under-9 through U-12 games on Saturday and Sunday. U-13 through U-19 boys and U-9 through U-19 girls’ action is set to take place the following weekend, March 24-25.

This year there will be 460 teams on 60 fields taking part over the two weekends, with 107 of the U-9 through U-12 boys’ teams playing this weekend.

This weekend’s games will take place at Long Park, Hellwig Park, Howison Park and Grizzly Sports Complex, with team registrations taking place at the Saturday game site 30-60 minutes before each team’s first game.

U-9 and U-10 games will be played with two 25-minute halves, while the rest of the games will be played with two 30-minute halves. The games in group play will not include overtime or penalties, though semifinals and finals matches will include two five-minute overtimes and a penalty-kick shootout, if necessary.

Each team will play two games on Saturday and one or two games on Sunday, though that could change due to weather. This weekend’s weather calls for a chance of thunderstorms on Friday, but partly cloudy skies and high temperatures in the low-to-mid 70s over the weekend.

This year, the Icebreaker tournament is partnering with Helping Haiti and Soccer (HANDS) to donate used soccer equipment as part of the U.S. Soccer Passback program, “Share the Equipment. Share the Game! Help HANDS make an impact in Haiti!”

HANDS donation boxes to collect new and used balls, cleats, uniforms, ball bags, socks and shin guards will be at each location on both weekends of the tournament.
