U.S. U-17 Women’s National Team draws 0-0 with China U-20 Women’s National Team to end camp in Chula Vista, Calif.

The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team finished off a 10-day camp at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., with a 0-0 draw against the China U-20 WNT on Monday. The USA also defeated local college sides UC Irvine and San Diego State during the camp, both by 3-0 scores.

It was the fourth consecutive positive result for the U.S. U-17s in matches against older teams after having defeated the France and Netherlands U-19s and tied the England U-19s during a competition in Spain in March.

This was the last event for the USA before the team heads to the CONCACAF Under-17 Women’s Championship being held in Guatemala from May 2-12. During the tournament, which will send three teams to the 2012 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Azerbaijan, the USA will face the Bahamas (May 3), Trinidad & Tobago (May 5) and Mexico (May 7) in Group B play. Group A consists of host Guatemala, Canada, Panama and Jamaica.

The tournament will be played entirely at Guatemala City’s Estadio Cementos Progreso, site of the 2010 CONCACAF Under-20 Women’s Championship.

Against China, the teams played a spirited 80-minute match that was fairly even as far as possession, but the Americans produced far more dangerous scoring chances, especially in the second half.

One of the USA’s best chances of the first half came when forward Maggie Purce got behind the defense into the right side of the penalty box, but she slid a hard and low shot just outside the left post with fellow forward Emily Bruder crashing the net.

Bruder was a menace after the break, almost scoring on a breakaway two minutes into the second half. In the 60th minute, she delayed a run up the middle and was in perfect position to strike a shot from near the penalty spot after 57th-minute substitute Darian Jenkins had raced into the left side of the penalty area and cut a pass back into the seam. Chinese goalkeeper Yang Yan made a nice kick save to keep the game scoreless.

In the 67th minute, Yang had to leap to tip a Morgan Stanton drive over the goal and four minutes after that Bruder had two chances off a scramble inside the Chinese penalty area. The first one was saved by the flying Yang. Bruder dug out the loose ball after the rebound and fired just over the right corner of the net from 12 yards out.

U.S. head coach Albertin Montoya used just three substitutes in each of the three matches during camp to simulate group play at the upcoming CONCACAF U-17 Women’s Championship.

Goalkeeper Jane Campbell earned the shutout for the USA, which has allowed just one goal in nine matches this year.
