Some game sites moved as Va. State Cup gets underway this weekend

By Jimmy LaRoue

The opening weekend of the Virginia State Cup is being impacted by road construction projects in the South Hampton Roads area that impacts two of the three major arteries to get in and out of the region for the next three weekends (Fri. Sept. 14 from 9 p.m. until Mon. Sept. 17 at 5 a.m.;  Fri. Sept. 21 from 9 p.m. until Mon. Sept. 24 at 5 a.m.; Fri. Sept. 28 from 9 p.m. through Mon. Oct. 1 at 5 a.m. The last weekend is a rain date for the project.).

The eastbound part of the Hampton Roads Bridge tunnel will be closed, as well as the southbound part of the James River Bridge, leaving only the Monitor-Merrimack Bridge Tunnel on I-664 as the only major artery south into South Hampton Roads.

Westbound lanes at the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel and the northbound lanes of the James River Bridge will remain open, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Because of the road closures and the expected traffic snarls resulting from them, the Virginia Youth Soccer Association has moved the nine games being played at Centreville Park and the Hampton Roads Soccer Complex to Warhill in Williamsburg.

The VYSA said on its website that it would look at the situation on a week-by-week basis to bring games back to the home fields for the Virginia Beach-area teams.
