SoccerWire is publishing Q&A articles with players who have Featured Profiles in the SoccerWire Recruiting Directory. The series allows players to share their stories on the college recruiting process, playing the game at the international level, travel and high school soccer, and their passion for the beautiful game.

In this edition we will showcase Sloane Phillips, who plays travel soccer in the Girls Academy for City SC, and has verbally committed to play college soccer in 2026 at Colorado.

SoccerWire: What made you decide to verbally commit to Colorado?

Sloane Phillips: Colorado has everything I am looking for in a college and soccer program. The coaches have a long history of success and helping develop players to go pro. Colorado soccer has been consistently successful and competitive in the PAC 12 and it’s exciting to be a part of the transition to the Big 12. The facilities and athletic staff at CU are incredible. Boulder is probably the most beautiful place to live. The coaches have been great at communicating and showing me why CU is the best place for me as a player and student. I feel confident they will help me continue to develop as a player to reach my goals. I am so thankful to have the opportunity to play at CU.

SW: What was the recruiting process like and what did you learn about yourself while going through it?

SP: It has been a really exciting process. I have learned so much about what is important to me as a player and a person. During June 15th and the days after, the colleges that stood out were the ones that spent a lot of time talking with me, were very clear about why I would be a good fit for their program and consistently found ways to show their excitement. Besides analyzing factors like program success, transfer rates and history of players going pro, I didn’t realize how important the relationship and conversations with the coaches would be in making my decision on where to do my official visits. In the end, I chose five official visits in each of the Power Four conferences, but after I visited Colorado, I just knew it was the place for me.

SW: How do you feel your strengths on the field will help the Buffaloes?

SP: Colorado is such a successful team with extremely talented players. I want to continue to challenge myself to play with the best players in practices and games. I love to be creative on the ball as an attacking player, create scoring opportunities and do everything necessary to help my team win. My experience playing in two ECNL Finals as well as the GA Finals over the past three years has given me the opportunity to play with and against top players. I can’t wait to continue to develop and train at the highest level.

SW: What are your favorite subjects in school and what do you think you would like to study in college?

SP: My favorite subjects are Math and English. I want to study something related to nutrition and hopefully work with other athletes one day.

SW: Outside of soccer, what clubs, organizations, and/or jobs are you involved in?

SP: In high school, I had the opportunity to run cross country and track which was cool to get to try a different sport. I am also in my third year of a culinary program through my school which helped me get more excited about studying nutrition in college. I also spend time coaching kids and working with a non-profit who helps children get opportunities to play sports.

SW: What are your favorite pair of cleats that you have ever owned?

SP: My favorite pair are my orange Nike Zoom Superfly 9. I probably bought them three times, but I can’t find them in my size anymore.

SW: What has your experience been like playing for City SC so far?

SP: I love to play at City SC and my teammates and coaches are great. My coaches have provided so much support through the recruitment process. They genuinely care that I go to the college that is the right fit for me and what I want. City SC has given me a lot of exposure at GA showcases and the training environment is intense and challenging. Our team has been really successful and had the opportunity to go to the GA Finals which has helped even more with college recruitment.

SW: If you could give one piece of advice to a younger player that wants to play at a high level what would it be?

SP: I would definitely say playing on your own outside of practice and trainings as much as you can. Also, working on your left and right foot equally.

SW: Is there anyone that you would like to give a shoutout to who has helped you both on and off of the field?

SP: My dad has played with me since I was little and helped me so much. My mom drives me everywhere and is my biggest supporter. Also, I really appreciate Marley Canales who played at UCLA and plays pro. She has been really supportive and her commitment to soccer has inspired me.
