RECAP: US Youth Soccer National League Girls Quarterfinals conclude in Arizona
MESA, Ariz. — Four exciting days of action at the USYS National League Quarterfinals in Mesa, Ariz., saw 68 girls teams earn their place in the next stage of national events — the National League Semifinals.
The latest girls’ quarterfinal took place Dec. 13-16 and included teams primarily from the National League Conferences and the Elite 64 Regional League. Teams competed in group play, with the groups designated as part of either a red or blue pathway.
Teams that advanced out of red groups will move on to the first semifinal event in February 2025 in Round Rock, Texas. Teams that advanced out of blue groups will move on to the second semifinal event in May 2025 in Oceanside, Calif. At each semifinal, teams will compete for berths to the 2025 USYS National Championships.
“Last year, we were successful enough to get to the National Championships and made it to the final match,” said Columbus United G11 Lions (OH) coach Nikki Thorne, whose team secured a spot in the National League Semifinals. “Getting the opportunity to come here and start the journey again at the National League Quarterfinals — and getting the opportunity to try to get back to the National Championship — is huge. To get back there is ultimately the goal.”
Nationals Union 06G Black (MI) was the lone defending National Champion to advance to the National League Semifinals from the games this weekend in Arizona. Additionally, 2024 National Finalists Columbus United G10 Lions (OH) and Columbus United G11 Lions (OH) each won all of their games in Mesa to advance to the National League Semifinals.
Michigan led all USYS State Associations with nine teams that advanced to the National League Semifinals during the girls weekend in Arizona. Ohio and North Texas each had eight teams advance, South Texas saw five teams move on, and Maryland and Eastern Pennsylvania each had four teams qualify for the next stage of events.
The teams moving on to the National League Semifinals will do so with their sights set on qualifying for the 2025 USYS National Championships. For some squads, that’s a goal that’s been years in the making.
“We’ve been working hard all year, and this is one step forward,” said Melania Turano, a center back and forward for South Shore FC Legacy G09 (NY-E). “Coming here is great. We play a bunch of great teams from all over and get to showcase our talent. And work toward the common goal of getting back to Nationals this season.”
