No. 25 New Mexico men’s soccer defeats No. 24 Old Dominion, 3-0, for C-USA lead

NORFOLK, VA — The 25th ranked Lobos of The University of New Mexico defeated 24th ranked Old Dominion, 3-0 before a crowd of 1,452 at the ODU Soccer Complex Saturday night. The New Mexico victory (10-4-2/6-1-1) puts them in first place in Conference USA by a point over the Monarchs (9-4-1/6-2) 19-18 and ended ODU’s five-game winning streak.

The Lobos first goal came 17 minutes into the match by James Rogers. Their second goal came in the final minute of the half off a steal by Chris Wehan, who then dribbled in on the left side and shot into the far righthand side of the net for a 2-0 halftime lead. The third and final goal came in the last 11 minutes of the match on a penalty kick by Michael Calderon who was fouled in the box.

ODU outshot New Mexico, 20-15 overall and the Lobos had a 10-9 edge in shots on goals led by Tim Hopkinson with four and Ivan Militar with two. The Monarchs had nine corner kicks to the Lobos one, but Lobos goalkeeper Michael Lisch who entered the game second in C-USA in goals against average at 0.90 came up with seven saves on the night, along with two additional defensive saves from his teammates. ODU’s goalkeeper Sean Stowe had a career high tying seven saves on the evening which is the third time this season for him.

ODU travels to South Carolina in the regular season league finale next Saturday night in Columbia, SC, while New Mexico finishes the season against Kentucky next Saturday.
