U.S. U-23 WNT wins Four Nations Tournament with 2-1 victory over England

CHICAGO (Via U.S. Soccer) – The U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Team defeated its counterparts from England 2-1 to win the Four Nations Tournament in Norway with a 2-0-1 record.

The USA also defeated Sweden 2-1 and tied host Norway 2-2. Sweden finished second, Norway was third and England was fourth.

Midfielder Rose Lavelle had a goal and an assist in the match while forward Taylor Smith scored the game-winner in the 73rd minute.

The USA opened the scoring just seven minutes into the match as Daphne Corboz found Lavelle with a pass near the top of the penalty box. Lavelle quickly turned and fired a shot that gave the Americans an early lead.

England equalized in the 60th minute off a corner kick that was deflected to Jess Sigsworth inside the six-yard box for a finish from close range.

The young Americans scored 13 minutes later as Lavelle chipped as pass over the defensive line to the speedy Smith on the right side. She took a few touches centrally and finished well into the far side netting. Lavelle, one of five players on the U.S. roster who participated in the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, picked up an assist in each of the three games to go with her goal in the match today.

Abby Smith started the first match in goal for the U.S., while Jane Campbell went the distance in the final two.
