USMNT set to square off with Netherlands in Amsterdam today at 2:30 p.m. ET
(Via U.S. Soccer) – For the second time in 2015, the U.S. MNT is on European soil and set to play international friendlies against two top opponents: World No. 6 Netherlands and reigning World Cup-Champion Germany. The USA will begin against the Netherlands on Friday June 5 at Amsterdam Arena in Amsterdam. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN, WatchESPN, UniMás and Univision Deportes Network.
U.S. MNT head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has 21 players in Amsterdam for the match-up with the Dutch team that finished third at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The U.S. roster is a hybrid of youth and experience as eight players have earned 10 caps or less, while nine have made 20 or more international appearances. The U.S. will be without the services of three key players as Jozy Altidore recovers from a hamstring injury and midfielder Alejandro Bedoya from a knee issue, while team captain Clint Dempsey remains in Seattle awaiting the birth of his fourth child.
The matches against the Netherlands and Germany will serve as a part of the team’s continued preparation for the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup and will be the fourth and fifth games for the U.S. against teams ranked in the top 20 in the world in 2015.
The MNT last went head-to-head with the Netherlands in Amsterdam on March 3, 2010. In that match, Holland jumped ahead 2-0, but the U.S. battled back with a bevy of chances in the game’s final minutes. One of those chances found the back of the net, off the foot of Carlos Bocanegra, for the MNT’s first and only goal in its four-game history against the Dutch, but time ran out and the U.S. dropped to 0-4-0 all-time against the Netherlands.
Since defeating Brazil 3-0 to take third place in the World Cup, the Netherlands have gone 3-4-1 and are unbeaten in their last three, most recently defeating tenth-ranked Spain 2-0 at Amsterdam Arena on March 31. The Netherlands currently sit in the third position of Group A in 2016 European Championship qualifying behind the Czech Republic and Iceland.

- The matchup in 2010 served as a tune-up ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, in which the Netherlands finished as tournament runner-up. Klass Jan Huntelaar scored the game-winning goal in that game and appears on the roster for this game against the U.S. as well.
- This will be the first matchup between the teams during Jurgen Klinsmann’s tenure as head coach.
- U.S. forward Aron Johannsson and Netherlands’ midfielder Steven Berghuis both play for Dutch Eredivisie club AZ Alkmaar, while Brad Guzan and Dutch defender Ron Vlaar are teammates at English Premier league club Aston Villa.
U.S. ROSTER NOTES:
- Brad Guzan returns to the U.S. fold for the first time in 2015. He missed the two fixture dates in March due to the birth of his first child.
- Fabian Johnson helped lift Borussia Mönchengladbach to a third-place finish in the Bundesliga that earned the club a spot in the 2016 UEFA Champions League group stage. The German side went 10-0-2 with Johnson in the starting lineup this season.
- Aron Johannsson recorded four goals in his final three matches as AZ Alkmaar snatched the third spot in the Dutch Eredivisie and a place in the 2016 UEFA Europa League.
- Alfredo Morales played a key role in FC Ingolstadt securing first place in the second division in Germany and subsequent promotion to the Bundesliga.
- Michael Bradley has played every minute of the USA’s five matches so far in 2015. In addition to Bradley, goalkeeper Nick Rimando is the only other player to start all five games. Two other MNT players have appeared in all five games in 2015: Gyasi Zardes and DeAndre Yedlin.
- Juan Agudelo, Bradley, Johannsson, Jordan Morris and Brek Shea are the five goalscorers for the U.S. in 2015 on the roster. Morris and Agudelo tallied in the “dos a cero” against Mexico on April 15. Bradley netted an “Olimpico” in the USA’s second game of the year, a 2-0 win over Panama at StubHub Center in February. Johannsson grabbed the MNT’s second goal in the 3-2 loss to Denmark in the team’s first European trip of the year. And, Shea has recorded a pair, including a stunning free kick in the USA’s 1-1 draw against No. 12-ranked Switzerland.
- William Yarbrough, 26, was born and raised in Mexico to two American parents. He has marshaled the backline for Club Leon to the 2013 Apertura and 2014 Clausura titles.

- Ventura Alvarado has appeared in three straight matches since making his debut in a U.S. uniform on March 25 against Denmark. Alvarado is a regular starter for the Club America team that captured the CONCACAF Champions League title and a trip to the FIFA Club World Cup.
- John Brooks and Michael Orozco have been paired four times in central defense since the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
- Kyle Beckerman started in the victory against Mexico in April before departing in the 69th minute with a thigh contusion.
- Miguel Ibarra, who earned his first cap for the U.S. in 2014, is the reigning MVP of the NASL
- Jermaine Jones, who was initially announced as a part of the roster, was ruled out after suffering a left groin injury in the first half of New England Revolutions 2-2 draw with LA Galaxy on May 31.
- Eight leagues from six countries are represented on the roster: Canada, England, Germany, Mexico, Netherlands, and the United States.
IN THE RECORD BOOKS:
- Midfielder Michael Bradley is inching closer to the century cap mark with 96 appearances since debuting for the MNT in 2006. He is tied with Alexi Lalas for 16th on the MNT all-time list and is the only player on this roster that played against the Netherlands in 2010.
- Michael Bradley, who assisted on Juan Agudelo’s goal in the 2-0 win against Mexico on April 15, moved into a three-way tie for eighth on the U.S. MNT all-time list for assists with 13. His 13 goals rank him No. 13 all-time.
- Brad Guzan and Nick Rimando are tied for fifth on the all-time wins list with 12. Rimando has started in all five games in 2015 and has been a part of two shared shutouts, with Sean Johnson in February against Panama and William Yarbrough in April against Mexico.
