ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Via Naval Academy) – The Navy men’s soccer team (2-1-1) put forth a dominant performance in a 3-0 shutout of Big Ten-member Ohio State (1-3-0) on Sunday at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. Three different players scored for the Midshipmen and senior goalkeeper Jackson Morgan earned his second shutout of the season.
Sophomore Aubrey Jones opened the scoring for Navy in the 36th minute when he one-timed a shot on the left side across the goal off the right post and in off a feed from sophomore Brock Dudley. Jones also scored against Oakland on Friday evening.
Ohio State’s Tyler Kidwell received his second yellow card of the game in the 71st minute. His second yellow became a red card and Ohio State had to play a man down for the final 19 minutes. Kidwell’s second yellow card came in the penalty box on Navy a corner kick. Senior Derek Vogel took the ensuing penalty kick, but the shot was saved by Buckeye goalkeeper Chris Froschauer.
It took just five minutes for Vogel to get on the scoreboard anyway as he headed in a chip pass from Dudley in the 76th minute to put the Mids on top, 2-0. It was Vogel’s second goal of the season.
Senior forward Thomas Shiiba then dribbled through the Ohio State defense to bury Navy’s third goal of the game from 18 yards out in the 82nd minute.
“We realize we are a good team and as long as we play the way we can play and not make silly mistakes then we can beat anyone,” said Shiiba. “This game was huge for us. We made sure we were solid on defense throughout the whole game and the team really came out and played well.”
Morgan made two saves for his 10th career shutout. Morgan stopped Danny Jensen on a one-on-one opportunity from 15 yards out in the 60th minute.
Dudley finished with a career-best two assists in the match for Navy.
“Brock’s been a stud for us,” said head coach Dave Brandt. “He started today and had the two assists and I think he was fantastic.”
Navy outshot Ohio State, 11-7, and held a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. Navy also led in corner kicks, 5-3.
This was the first meeting between the two schools. Ohio State advanced to the NCAA Tournament Second Round last season.
Navy will next play at Longwood (1-1-0) on Friday at 6 PM.
