BALTIMORE (Via George Washington University) – Freshman Sofia Pavon tallied her first two career goals on Thursday evening as the George Washington women’s soccer squad downed UMBC, 2-0, on the road in its non-conference finale.

The victory marks the third consecutive win for the Colonials (5-4-0), while the Retrievers fall to 2-7-1 on the season with the loss.

The Colonials took a 1-0 lead 13:04 into the game on a laser shot by Pavon from 25 yards out into the upper right corner of the goal for the rookie’s first career score and the eventual gamewinner.

Pavon increased GW’s lead with her second goal of the game in the 21st minute after receiving a pass from classmate Dani Frese on the right side of the box. Pavon then drew the goalie out and lofted the ball from 15 yards out over the head of UMBC’s keeper for the final goal of the match, giving the Colonials a 2-0 edge that would stick.

The Colonials dominated possession throughout the contest, outshooting the Retrievers 15-4 on the night, while holding UMBC to just one shot on goal. Pavon, senior Kristi Abbate and sophomore Brittany Cooper each posted a game-high three shots.

Redshirt-sophomore Miranda Horn and senior Ellen Conway split time between the posts for the Colonials, combining for their fifth blank sheet of the season.

The Colonials return to action on Oct. 1 at home as the Buff and Blue host Saint Joseph’s at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus to open Atlantic 10 play.
