The two Potomac area teams that entered the season ranked in the NSCAA Top 25 Coaches’ Poll swept the opening weekend, as No. 4 Virginia and No. 17 Virginia Tech each jumped out to 2-0-0 records.

The Howard University women’s soccer team kicked off the 2016 season with a 2-1 victory over Cleveland State on Friday night at Greene Stadium.

The George Washington women’s soccer squad opened 2016 with a 1-0 victory at St. Francis (Pa.) on Friday afternoon at the Red Flash’s Stokes Soccerplex
No. 4 UVA women’s soccer routs Liberty 4-0 to kick off season
Youth played a big role in the season opener on Friday, with two freshmen scoring goals and another assisting on a third, as No. 4 Virginia (1-0-0) defeated Liberty (0-1-0) by a score of 4-0.
No. 17 Virginia Tech blanks LSU 1-0 in regular season opener
A first half goal from All-American Murielle Tiernan fueled the No. 17/20 Virginia Tech women’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over LSU on Friday evening at Patriots Point, in Charleston, South Carolina.
James Madison women’s soccer drops 4-3 OT thriller to Arkansas
James Madison women’s soccer scored two goals in the final 55 seconds of regulation to erase Arkansas’ 3-1 lead, but the Razorbacks converted a corner kick in the second minute of the second overtime period to hand the Dukes a 4-3 loss in both teams’ season-opener at University Park on Friday night.
Corboz records hat trick, Georgetown downs Towson 6-0
Georgetown University junior midfielder Rachel Corboz (Green Brook, N.J./Pingry) scored three times in the opening 29 minutes of the game and the Hoyas cruised to a 6-0 win over Towson in the season opener for both schools on Friday afternoon at Shaw Field. It was the 10th-straight season-opening win for the Hoyas, who improve to 1-0-0, while the Tigers fall to 0-1-0.
VMI takes season opener 1-0 over South Carolina State behind Cotter, Marbury
Lizzy Cotter broke a 0-0 tie in the 19th minute and Emily Marbury recorded her third career shutout as the VMI Keydets defeated the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs, 1-0, in women’s soccer action Friday in Orangeburg, S.C. The contest was the season opener for both teams.
TCU defeats Maryland 2-1 in overtime
Junior forward Chelsea Jackson tied the match with a goal in the 22nd minutes, but the Maryland women’s soccer team would fall, 2-1, to TCU in its season opener at Ludwig Field Friday night.
William & Mary sinks East Carolina 3-0 in season opener
The William & Mary women’s soccer team scored three times in the first half, and senior Grace Smith made five saves in her first career start and shutout, as W&M topped East Carolina 3-0 in its season opener. The Tribe improves to 1-0 overall, while the Pirates drop to 0-1.
VCU opens with heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Northwestern
The VCU Rams started off their season on a heartbreaking note Friday night, as they squared off against the Northwestern Wildcats. It took more than two 45 minute periods to decide a winner, as eight minutes into overtime, NU’s Brenna Lovera found the back of the net from 10 yards away to give Northwestern the 1-0 win over the Black and Gold.
UMBC opens season with 3-2 double overtime win over American
Freshmen Jamie Shiflett (Baltimore, Md. /Sparrows Point) and Nikki Saad (Hummelstown, Pa. /Lower Dauphin) kicked off their careers at UMBC with fireworks, helping the Dawgs to a 3-2 double overtime win over American on Friday night at Retriever Soccer Park.
No. 5 Stanford edges Navy, 2-1, in 2016 season opener
Despite a strong defensive first half by the Navy women’s soccer team (0-1), #5/1 Stanford (1-0) edged Navy, 2-1, on Friday at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. Cardinal sophomore midfielder Michelle Xiao scored the game-winning goal in the 77th minute.
Richmond dominates Longwood 3-0 in season opener
First game jitters didn’t affect the University of Richmond women’s soccer team in Friday night’s season opener. The Spiders put on a dominant performance at Longwood, defeating the host Lancers 3-0.
George Mason wins season opener 2-1 over Old Dominion
The George Mason women’s soccer team won its regular season opener 2-1 over Old Dominion on Friday night at George Mason Stadium.
Saturday, August 20
Maryland plays Gardner-Webb to 1-1 draw
Junior forward Chelsea Jackson opened the scoring with her second goal in as many games, but the Maryland women’s soccer team was forced to settle for a 1-1 draw with Gardner-Webb at Ludwig Field Saturday afternoon.
Hampton opens season with 2-2 draw at Saint Peter’s
The 2016 Hampton University women’s soccer season opened Saturday in the steamy heat of Jersey City, N.J. as the Lady Pirates and Saint Peter’s played to a 2-all tie at Jaroschak Field in the season opener for both teams.

Howard vs. Radford game ruled no contest on Sunday
The Howard women’s soccer game against Radford has been officially ruled a “no contest”, according to NCAA rules. The teams were able to play the first 45 minutes of action before heavy rain and lightning delayed the start of the second half and the match was unable to be restarted within the necessary timeframe.
George Washington women’s soccer defeats Cleveland State 2-1
Rookie Deena DeSilva tallied her first career goal as the George Washington women’s soccer squad downed visiting Cleveland State, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon in the Colonials’ 2016 home opener at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
No. 17 Virginia Tech women’s soccer edges Mississippi State 2-1 in OT
A penalty kick in the 89th minute by senior midfielder Candace Cephers gave the No. 17/20 Virginia Tech women’s soccer team the offensive spark it needed, as the Hokies tallied two goals in the final minutes of play to secure a 2-1 win over Mississippi State on Sunday, at Patriots Point, in Charleston, South Carolina.

Despite leveling the match in the 65th minute, the Towson University women’s soccer team dropped its home opener 2-1 against East Carolina University Sunday afternoon.
Navy drops double-overtime heartbreaker to TCU, 1-0
Sunday’s women’s soccer match was deadlocked for 103 minutes until TCU’s Lauren Sajewich headed in the game-winning goal in the 104th minute to down Navy, 1-0, on Sunday at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. TCU improved to 2-0 on its East Coast trip, while Navy fell to 0-2 to begin the season.
American falls 4-1 to Campbell
Sophomore Yari Bradfield scored her first goal of the season, but the American University women’s soccer team dropped its second game of the early season, 4-1, to Campbell on Sunday afternoon at the Eakes Complex.
Hill and Hogan’s Goals Lift ODU Over Richmond, 2-1, in Home Opener
The Old Dominion women’s soccer team (1-1, 0-0) scored two unanswered goals to hand Richmond (1-1, 0-0) its first loss of the season by a 2-1 score at the ODU Soccer Complex in front of a crowd of 305. Kathryn Hill and Madison Hogan each scored their first goals of the 2016 season in ODU’s home opener on Sunday night.
Late goal puts Tennessee over Liberty on Sunday
The Liberty women’s soccer team looked to rebound from Friday night’s season-opening loss to Virginia, squaring off with Tennessee on Sunday at Regal Soccer Stadium. In a competitive game that remained scoreless until the 77th minute, the Volunteers managed to strike with a late goal from Rylie O’Keefe, defeating the Lady Flames, 1-0.
Two second-half goals lead Arkansas over VCU 2-1
After a first half goal from junior Amanda Hallesjo, the VCU Rams suffered a second half setback. The Black and Gold surrendered two second-half goals to the Arkansas Razorbacks to give them a 2-1 loss in their final game of the JMU Invitational.
