George Washington women’s soccer defeats LSU 3-1 on the road
BATON ROUGE, La. (Via George Washington University) – The George Washington women’s soccer team downed LSU on the road, 3-1, at the LSU Soccer Stadium on Thursday evening to remain perfect in 2016 through three games.
The Colonials improved to 3-0-0 to start the season as 2015 NCAA Tournament qualifier LSU fell to 1-2-0 with the loss.
Senior MacKenzie Cowley put the Colonials up early after shooting the rebound from a deflected cross by sophomore Charley Prevost into an empty net in the 12th minute. Cowley has now scored in each of GW’s matches this season.
LSU took its first shot in the 17th minute, but the Colonials’ defense thwarted the threat.
The Tigers then rattled off two shots in the 25th and 27th minutes, but both were denied by redshirt junior keeper Miranda Horn.
The Colonials took their second shot in the 36th minute, but LSU’s keeper saved sophomore Mia Barreda’s would-be score inside the left post and GW took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
GW doubled its lead early in the second when junior Brittany Cooper’s shot from distance soared just under the crossbar to put the Colonials up, 2-0, in the 48th minute.
Cowley nearly struck again in the 71st minute when she laced a shot on a line from 12 yards out, but the LSU keeper tipped the ball over the crossbar for the save.
Cooper increased GW’s lead to three in the 76th minute with her second goal of the game, curling the ball inside the far post from the edge of the box to put the Colonials up, 3-0. Rookie Olivia DiCristofaro earned her first career point with an assist on the play.
The Tigers prevented the shutout in the 85th minute when Delaney Sheehan found the back of the net on a shot inside the left post from 12 yards out.
Horn wrapped her night with three saves, while sophomore Anna Tapen tallied two.
The Colonials next take on UMBC on Thursday, Sept. 1, to begin a three-match homestand.
