U.S. Soccer Development Academy East Conference Recap: Week 9
U.S. Soccer Development Academy East Conference clubs across all divisions were active over the weekend.
Continue reading for a recap of some of the most notable performances in the U-14, U-15/16 and U-17/18 age groups, including a large group of U-14 teams which competed in the league’s East Regional Showcase in North Carolina.
U-14
Bethesda SC swept its three opponents at the East Regional Showcase, outscoring the competition by a margin of 9-3. Bethesda earned a 1-0 win over World Class FC, a 4-2 win over Everton FC Westchester and a 4-1 win over Beachside SC. Jose Ortega led the attack with three goals, followed by Vincent Castillo, Bryang Kayo and Eduardo Ruiz-Garay with two scores each.
Capital Area Railhawks – CASL enjoyed a perfect 3-0-0 weekend at the Showcase, not allowing a single goal along the way. Goalkeepers Robert Alphin and Ethan Wady split time between the posts, combining with the back line to extend the team’s shutout streak to four.
Charlotte Soccer Academy also notched three straight wins playing in its home state, prevailing 2-0 over Kendall SC, 3-0 against Cedar Stars Academy – Monmouth and 4-3 over New York Red Bulls. Aidan Dwyer found the net five times at the event, recording a brace against the Red Bulls and a hat trick against Cedar Stars.

BW Gottschee Academy earned two wins and a draw at the Showcase, shutting out Triangle FC Alliance and Richmond United 3-0 and 2-0 in a Saturday doubleheader before playing Boca United FC to a 1-1 draw on Sunday. Goalkeeper Andrew Kolarzh played full time in all three games behind the tough Gottschee back line, while five different players found the net on the weekend.
The New York Red Bulls won both legs of a doubleheader against fellow MLS academies on Saturday, blanking the New England Revolution 3-0 before downing Orlando City SC 3-1. New York wrapped the event with a narrow 4-3 loss to Charlotte Soccer Academy. Over the course of the weekend for the Red Bulls, Jake Novoshelski and Daniel Ramm each racked up three goals, and Esteban Molina netted two.
Cedar Stars Academy – Bergen went unbeaten at 2-0-1 in the tournament, earning three straight clean sheets. Bergen blanked Weston FC 2-0 to open the event, then defeated Carolina Rapids by the same score and closed the weekend with a scoreless draw against Chargers SC. Thomas Altirs scored two goals in a three minute span against Weston, while Anthony Alvites and defender Jeremy Portillo Martinez provided the scoring against the Rapids. Defender Tayvon Gray played every minute of action over the weekend, teaming with the rest of the back line along with goalkeepers Archie Jones and Fabian Diaz to shut down the opposing attacks.
PDA also posted an undefeated 2-0-1 mark, giving up just two goals at the event. Marco Nazor and Alex Caputo each found the net twice for PDA, as goalkeepers Christian Matson and Tomas Lazicki combined to hold their opponents in check. Defenders Remy Vailhe and Brandon Nicholas played full time in all three matches to lead the back line.
New York SC earned two wins and a draw, blanking Loudoun Soccer 2-0 and defeating Concorde Fire 5-2 before playing PA Classics to a 2-2 tie. Forward Jackson Gould had four goals at the event, highlighted by a first half hat trick against Concorde. Goalkeeper Thomas Pisapia notched the clean sheet in net, as Takumi Osaki and Alec Schwartzman played full time on the back line.

Virginia Development Academy posted a strong 2-1-0 record at the Showcase, highlighted by a 3-0 win over FC Boston Bolts and a 5-1 win over Carolina Rapids. Griffin Yow scored three goals at the event, and Ryan Yankee recorded a brace in VDA’s win over Carolina to lead the attack. Goalkeeper James Anderson and the back line gave up just one goal over the course of the team’s two victories.
Empire United picked up a pair of wins in North Carolina, downing Tampa Bay United 3-1 and Lehigh Valley United 3-2. Elhadji Sidibe and Jacob Vitale sparked the Empire offense with two goals each at the event.
D.C. United won two of three matches on the weekend, highlighted by a 2-0 shutout of New York City FC and a 3-1 win over New England Revolution. Five different players found the net for United’s balanced attack, while goalkeeper Hayden Evans earned both wins between the posts.

U-15/16
The New York Red Bulls (7-1-1) got back on the winning side with a strong all around effort in a 3-0 decision against Bethesda SC. Playing at home, the Red Bulls had a two-goal performance from Jack Valderrabano after Evan Chacon opened the scoring in the 13th minute. Defensively, it was New York’s fourth shutout of the season.
Baltimore Armour (7-2-0) earned its fifth consecutive victory, remaining neck-and-neck with the Red Bulls for the Atlantic Division lead. Danique Parker, Jacob Griggs and Peter Mangione netted second half goals for Baltimore in a 3-2 comeback win over PA Classics on Saturday afternoon. Andrew Burkhardt spotted Classics a 2-0 lead heading into halftime with a first half brace, but Baltimore hit its stride after the intermission.

Orlando City SC (4-0-4) still has not lost through its first eight matches, following a dominant 4-0 win over IMG Academy. Four players netted a goal each for Orlando’s balanced attack, with three of the scores coming in the second half.
The Philadelphia Union (4-1-3) ran their current unbeaten streak to six, defeating Richmond United 3-1. Axel Picazo recorded a brace, and Jason Aoyama found the net as for the Union in the victory.
Empire United (4-2-1) extended its current winning streak to three, defeating Beachside SC 2-0. Ravi Travers opened the scoring with a 29th minute strike, and Joseph Alex added a 53rd minute insurance strike. Ultimately, Empire did not need the insurance, as goalkeeper Nathan Hanna recorded the clean sheet playing with a dominant back line. Defenders Jameson Railey, Jacob Schaffer and Ryan Schmidle each played the full 80 minutes in the shutout effort.
PDA (4-2-3) is now unbeaten in its past four matches following an impressive 3-0 shutout of D.C. United. Zach Riviere opened the scoring in the closing minutes of the first half, before Scott Byrouty and William Basanaga carried that momentum into the second half with goals of their own. Goalkeeper Boris DelValle recorded the clean sheet in net, while Byrouty and Stephen Schmitt played the full 80 minutes for PDA’s defense.
Everton FC Westchester (2-5-1) blanked Seacoast United 3-0 on Saturday, behind goals from Eoin Keogh, Luis-Henrique Amaral and Connor Fitzgerald. Goalkeepers Cam Farrar and Diego Medina each played a half in the clean sheet effort.
Continental FC DELCO (4-2-1) won its second straight match, 2-1 over Cedar Stars Academy – Monmouth. Joseph Martini and Jeremy Rafanello provided the scoring, as the entire back line and goalkeeper Raymond Fortebuono played full time in the win.

U-17/18
Orlando City SC (7-1-0) rebounded from its first loss of the season last weekend with a 2-0 shutout of IMG Academy on Saturday. Following a scoreless first half, David Norris and David Loera netted second half goals while goalkeeper Justin Bauer and the back line posted Orlando’s fourth clean sheet of the season.
The Philadelphia Union (5-1-1) went on the road and picked up a 1-0 shutout win over Richmond United, behind a 9th minute goal from Kalil ElMedkhar. The lone score was all the Union needed, as goalkeeper Jahmali Waite and the Union back line blanked an opponent for the fifth time in their first seven games.

Beachside SC (3-2-2) won its second straight match, edging Empire United 2-1 on a 78th minute game-winner by Kamrock Tovar. Ahdan Tait put Beachside ahead in just the 4th minute of the game, but Empire’s Lukas Rubio evened the score at 1-1 in the 16th minute, prior to Tovar’s late game heroics.
PDA (3-5-1) edged D.C. United 2-1, led by a brace from U.S. U-20 Men’s National Team forward Isaiah Young. After opening the scoring with a strike in the 2nd minute, Young kept at it and ultimately netted the game-winner for PDA in the 90th minute. Goalkeeper Ethan Koehler and the PDA back line held D.C. to just one score, an 85th minute equalizer by Nelson Blanco.
Cedar Stars Academy – Monmouth (3-6-0) defeated Continental FC DELCO in a 5-1 rout, fueled by a well-rounded attack which had four different players find the net. Cameron McGregor recorded a brace, scoring a pair of second half goals.
