U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team draws Portland Thorns 2-2

PORTLAND, Ore. (Via U.S. Soccer) – The U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Team drew 2-2 with the host Portland Thorns at the 2018 Thorns Spring Invitational as forward Catarina Macario scored both goals for the USA.

Portland went ahead in the 19th minute on a goal from Ifeoma Onumonu. U.S. Women’s National Team midfielder Lindsey Horan set up the play when she picked off a pass near midfield, drove downfield, and slipped a pass to Onumonu inside the penalty area for her to finish from 12 yards out into the bottom left corner.

Portland doubled its lead in the 34th minute through Mallory Weber via an assist from another U.S. WNT player in Meghan Klingenberg, who delivered a pinpoint cross from the left wing. Weber controlled the ball with her head and then with her second touch sent a looping header into the back of the net.

Down 2-0 at halftime, the USA pulled a goal back in the 58th minute when Macario sent a shot from a tight angle near the left post into the right side of the net.

The USA got a dramatic equalizer in the 90th minute when Macario, who also scored in the USA’s first game, curled a well-placed shot from just inside the penalty area into the top right corner from 15 yards out.

The USA out-shot the Thorns, which used 21 players, 16-9, while U.S. head coach B.J. Snow used 18 players.

The USA fell to the Houston Dash, 2-1, in its first game of the event on March 11 and will finish up against the Chicago Red Stars on March 17.

For this tournament, Snow called up a roster of 23 collegiate players and one professional, goalkeeper Bella Geist of the Portland Thorns, who was in net for this match.
