NASL highlights – Week 2
San Antonio had a very nice debut–if we’re talking about attendance.
More than 13,000 fans showed up for the Scorpions NASL opener, but a four-goal display by Puerto Rico, and two missed penalties for the Scorpions, spoiled their home debut as the Islanders took a 4-0 win.
The Islanders’ Jonathan Faña was named the NASL’s offensive player of the week after picking up two goals in the win, as Puerto Rico is the league’s lone unblemished team at 2-0-0, with Fort Lauderdale in second at 1-0-1. Tampa Bay is the only other NASL team with a win, getting a 1-0 decision over Edmonton in the Rowdies’ home opener and is 1-1-0, having conceded just one goal.
The Cary News notes that the NASL is “bullish” about expansion, and is looking to Detroit, Indianapolis, San Diego and Phoenix as potential cities to host a franchise, though MLS president Mark Abbott sounded a note of caution about the RailHawks, or any other entity looking to make the jump to MLS.
The week’s results:
Puerto Rico 4, San Antonio 0
Fort Lauderdale 0, Minnesota 0
