On Tuesday night, North Carolina fell 1-0 to James Madison of the always competitive Colonial Athletic Association. The surprise upset was the Tarheels’ first of the season, and only in almost a year. The match was a rare downer for UNC, and with these numbers ACC Own the Pitch will show you just how rare.

329 – Days since the Tarheels last lost a match. Prior to their run-in with James Madison, they had won or tied 16 straight matches and had not lost since a 1-0 game against Davidson on Oct. 17, 2011.

3 – Shots on goal for UNC Tuesday night, the team’s second lowest output of the season. The Tarheels managed to put together a winning effort with just two shots on goal on Aug. 31 against West Virginia, a match UNC won 1-0 on a goal by Martin Murphy.

3 – Career losses for head coach Carlos Somoano during his short tenure at UNC. In 2011, Somoano led the team to a College Cup title in his first season with the Tarheels, losing only two matches along the way.

1 – Carolina’s current national ranking in the NSCAA coaches poll, which was announced on Tuesday but before the Tarheels’ match against JMU. It is likely UNC’s reign atop the poll will come to an end next week, but it would be shocking if they were to drop out of the top five. Maryland has a chance to keep the No. 1 spot within the ACC if they have another impressive weekend.
