Chapter 18: MIND YOUR PRONOUNS – ROOKIE: Surviving Your Freshman Year of College Soccer

ROOKIE Cover JPEGLet’s do a little exercise in translation.

When a player says: “A lot of the players think that…”

The coach hears: “Me and my roommate think that…”

When a player says: “We all would like to…”

The coach hears: “I would like to… (and I hope some of my teammates feel the same way).”

When you approach your coach to speak about an issue, speak on your own behalf. Casually expanding your pronouns won’t camouflage your agenda. Be an adult and say what you need to say. Have the conviction to present your case on its own merits instead of trying to fluff it up with support from phantom teammates.

I don’t imagine you’ll approach your coach very often as a rookie, but this advice will serve you well throughout your career.
