USWNT set to break attendance record at upcoming Victory Tour match in Philadelphia
CHICAGO (Aug. 22, 2019) – More than 44,100 tickets have been sold for the U.S. Women’s National Team match against Portugal on Aug. 29 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, breaking the record for the largest crowd for a stand-alone friendly game for the U.S. Women. The match is the second of the 2019 Victory Tour.
With one week left before the 7 p.m. ET game (coverage on FS1 begins at 6:30 p.m. ET), fans are encouraged to purchase tickets through ussoccer.com and ticketmaster.com and be part of history. Tickets start at $35. Groups of 20 or more can order directly at ussoccer.com. Tickets are not sold at Lincoln Financial Field except on the day of the event.
The previous USWNT record for a stand-alone friendly – a game that was not a part of a World Cup, Olympics or a doubleheader – was set during the first match of the 2015 Victory Tour after that year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup triumph when 44,028 fans came out to Heinz Field, home of the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers, to watch the team defeat Costa Rica 8-0 on Aug. 16.
The crowd in Philadelphia will be just the second stand-alone friendly in U.S. WNT history with more than 40,000 fans and would be the first to hit 50,000 if it reaches that mark. The crowd at The Linc will already be the 10th largest in U.S. history on home soil, with the nine games in front of it being six 1999 World Cup matches, two 1996 Olympic matches, and a doubleheader with the U.S. Men’s National Team in 1998.
The crowd of 37,040 for the USA’s first Victory Tour match, held at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., on Aug. 3, is now the third largest stand-alone crowd for a friendly in WNT history.
For the USWNT, this will be the fourth match in Philadelphia proper at Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Philadelphia Eagles. The USA has played six matches just south of Philadelphia in nearby Chester, Pa., at Talen Energy Stadium, home of the Philadelphia Union of MLS.
Philadelphia is the de facto hometown of U.S. legend Carli Lloyd, who hails from Delran, New Jersey, which is just 18 miles from Lincoln Financial Field. Lloyd recently visited the Eagles training camp where she kicked a 55-yard field goal that quickly went viral. The City of Brotherly Love is also the current residence of 2019 FIFA Women’s Player of the Year nominee Julie Ertz, whose husband Zach is an All-Pro tight end for the Eagles and a Super Bowl champion.
