Three more clubs join Girls Academy

A trio of clubs were announced as the newest members of the Girls Academy on Thursday.

With the additions of Santa Clara Sporting, FC Bay Area and Sporting Delaware, the Girls Academy now features 64 member clubs ahead of the inaugural season.

The two Northern California based clubs – Santa Clara Sporting and FC Bay Area – will be part of the Northwest Conference. They are the 9th and 10th clubs to join the Northwest, after the conference added a pair of clubs last week as well.

“Santa Clara Sporting Club is very pleased to enter the Girls Academy,” said SC Sporting Girls Director of Coaching Demitri Cacoyannis. “The high-level local, regional and national competition will enhance our commitment of player development, and college exposure for our girls’ program.”

FC Bay Area will be led by former San Jose Earthquakes Girls Academy Director Andres Deza, who had this to say: “FC Bay Area is excited to announce its induction into the GA League. We are committed to player development and we feel the GA league will provide us a league to compete at the national level.”

Meanwhile, Sporting Delaware becomes the 9th member of the Mid-Atlantic Conference, which also features clubs from Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

“Sporting Delaware is excited to join the Girls Academy compete with the top teams in the country,” stated Sporting Delaware General Manager Steve Cavalier.

The Girls Academy is a new competition platform launched by members of the Development Player League (DPL). The DPL has stated that it will continue to provide its clubs with flexibility in the following two key areas:

  • Permission for all players in the Girls Academy to participate in high school soccer.
  • Revising the substitution rules to encourage clubs to better utilize their player pools, especially when showcasing their players to college coaches.
