REPORT: U.S. Open Cup to be canceled, breaking streak of over 100 years
According to a report from Sports Illustrated’s Brian Straus, the 107th edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup will be canceled by the U.S. Soccer Federation.
The 2020 event was suspended back in March, and as of now, the window to resume play and ultimately complete the competition is no longer manageable. Straus reported that U.S. Soccer is expected to announce the cancelation this week, and will look ahead to 2021 for a fresh start.
With the cancelation, the U.S. Open Cup will break its streak of 106 straight years of playing the event to completion. It is the longest-running soccer competition in the country.
