USMNT prospect Nicholas Gioacchini shines in French Ligue 2

U.S. Men’s National Team prospect Nicholas Gioacchini pulled off some dramatic late-match heroics for Caen in its 2-1 victory against Nancy in French Ligue 2 on Saturday.

After replacing Alexandre Mendy in the 80th minute, Gioacchini struck for the winning goal four minutes into stoppage time, putting home Hugo Vandermersch’s right-wing feed from six yards. It was Gioacchini’s third goal in 579 minutes through eight matches this season.

Gioacchini is a 20-year-old attacking player who was born in Kansas City, Mo. to an Italian father and Jamaican mother, making him eligible for three different national teams. He has elected to represent the United States, and received his first call-up with the senior U.S. squad this month.

Before moving to France as a teenager, Gioacchini spent much of his youth career in Maryland where he played for Bethesda Soccer Club, Cerritos Soccer Academy, D.C. United Academy, Olney Soccer Club and ESSA Soccer Academy.

For the past several years, Gioacchini has risen through the professional development system in France, receiving some major accolades along the way. He has represented Caen’s first team since 2019, scoring 5 goals in his first 24 appearances.

His first international cap could come as soon as Nov. 12 when the U.S. takes on Wales, or on Nov. 16 against Panama.
