No. 20 Providence hands No. 1 Georgetown first loss of the season

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Led by two goals and one assist from junior Luis Garcia (Gran Canaria, Spain) the No. 20 Providence College men’s soccer team upset No. 1 Georgetown University, 3-0 Wednesday on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.

It marked the Friars’ first win over a No. 1 ranked team since upsetting Maryland, 5-4, on November 20, 2016 in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. Garcia opened the scoring when he converted on a free kick just outside the box on the left side as he sailed a shot over the wall into the top left corner with 25:54 left in the first half.

The Friars increased their lead at 60:11 when Garcia scored on a blast from 50 yards out at a tough angle that found the right side of the net. Graduate student Simon Triantfillou (Burlington, Ontario) closed out the scoring for the Friars with a low shot from the top of the box at 68:23. The victory gave the Friars their first win over the Hoyas since October 15, 2014 when they defeated Georgetown, 2-0, in Washington, D.C.

GAME FLOW & NOTES

PC’s Davis Smith had the first scoring chance of the half when he headed a corner kick over the cross bar 22:15 into the game.
The Friars led 1-0 at the half which marked the first time the Hoyas trailed at halftime this season. It also ended a Hoyas’ streak of 21 games of not trailing after 45 minutes of play.
The last time the Friars earned a win over the No. 1 team in the country was a 5-4 win at Maryland on November 20, 2016 in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Friars have played four games this season versus ranked opponents and have posted a 3-1 mark.
Garcia’s first goal marked just the sixth goal scored against the Hoyas this season.
Garcia recorded his second goal of the night when he took a short pass from Paulo Lima near the left sideline and unleashed a blast from 50 yards that landed in the opposite corner of the net at 60:11.
Simon Triantfillou scored his first goal of the season at 68:23 off passes from Christopher Roman and Luis Garcia.
Luis Garcia registered his second two-goal game of the season as he had two goals in the season opening win versus Fordham on August 26.
With two goals and one assist, Luis Garcia recorded a career-high five points for the Friars.
The victory gave the Friars their first win over the Hoyas since October 15, 2014 when they defeated the Hoyas, 2-0, in Washington, D.C.
3-0 is the Hoyas’ largest margin of defeat since Nov. 3, 2016 when they lost to Creighton, 3-0.
It marks the first time this season Georgetown has given up more than one goal in a game.
It marked the seventh time this season the Friars have scored three or more goals in a game.
It marks the fourth shutout this season for the Friars.

(2-0)- Providence – 60:11/2^nd – Luis Garcia rifled a shot from 50 yards from the left side that found the opposite corner of the net. It was assisted by Paulo Lima.
(3-0)- Providence-68:23/2^nd – Simon Triantfillou converted on a low shot into the left corner off a feed from Chris Roman. Luis Garcia had the other assist on the goal.
