Virginia Tech welcomes VDA ECNL forward Samantha Deguzman

The Virginia Tech women’s soccer program is currently introducing each member of its 2023 recruiting class on a rolling basis.

Following the introductions of Ellie “Red” Farrell and Emma Garrelts, Anna Weir, Savannah Sabo and Ava Arengo, the Hokies are highlighting Samantha Deguzman, a forward out of Virginia Development Academy.

“We are excited and pleased to announce Sam as part of our 2023 recruiting class,” said head coach Chugger Adair. “Sam is an explosive, dynamic, and versatile forward who can beat you individually. She can score goals within the team play as well as create on her own. During the few years we recruited Sam, we have seen her continue to grow and develop by increasing her versatility and playing ability. We expect her come in to create and add to the already strong offensive power we have Virginia Tech.”

Why did you choose Tech?? I chose Virginia Tech because the moment I stepped on campus I knew this was going to be the place to call home. Being surrounded by great coaches and an amazing team environment while playing competitively at the highest level is something I have always dreamed of doing and I felt Tech was the right place to make that dream come true.

What was your favorite thing about your visit? My favorite thing about my visit was how everyone treated me like family and made me feel welcomed. I also liked bonding with the team and seeing what it’s going to be like living at Virginia Tech.

What do you like about the Tech women’s soccer program? I like how the team pushes each other to get better, the environment the coaches and team have created, and the amount of support Tech gets.

What are your soccer strengths? My soccer strengths are being able to use my speed to attack defenders one-on-one and also being a very technical player.

Who is your favorite pro player (why)? My favorite pro player is Carli Lloyd because she is not only a great soccer player, but she is an inspiration to many people. I admire her work ethic, love for the sport, and competitiveness to get better and push others around her to get better. She never gives up and is always playing with her heart to give it everything she’s got. I like how she always attacks the ball, has an amazing shot, and displays great leadership.

What is your most memorable soccer moment (why)? My most memorable soccer moment is playing on the same high school team as my sister and cousin during my sophomore and junior year. I played forward while they both played in the midfield, so we were always connecting with each other on the field with the chemistry that we had and that led to many goals and assists. It is such a great feeling playing with your family and scoring goals together.

What do you think you will major in (why)? I plan to major in marketing management because I have always been interested in business and marketing management will allow me to pursue a career in a variety of industries.

What is one thing you would want Tech fans to know about you?  I want fans to know that I have two dogs named Oakley and Oshie that I love so much and that my whole family are my biggest supporters.
