COLUMBUS, Ohio – The eighth-seeded Iowa Hawkeyes earned their second Big Ten Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament title on Sunday with a 1-0 victory over Wisconsin in the championship match at Lower.com Field in Columbus, Ohio. With the win, the Hawkeyes will be the Big Ten’s automatic qualifier for the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
Iowa (12-4-4) evened its championship record at 2-2 and became the first number eight seed to win the Big Ten Tournament.
Iowa fifth year defender Samantha Cary was named Defensive Player of the Tournament after anchoring a defensive effort that surrendered just one goal throughout the tournament, while upsetting three top 12 ranked opponents. Wisconsin redshirt senior Emma Jaskaniec was named Offensive Player of the Tournament.
The Hawkeyes recorded just one shot on the day, but made the most of their opportunity. The shot came from the penalty spot in the 18th minute, as redshirt senior Josie Durr found the right side of the net for the day’s lone marker.
The Badgers tried to respond less than 30 seconds later, but Iowa’s senior goaltender Macy Enneking made one of her two saves in the win.
