Chapter 40: YOUR TEAMMATES DON’T CONTROL THEIR PLAYING TIME EITHER – ROOKIE: Surviving Your Freshman Year of College Soccer
If you’re one of those players who is going to obsess over playing time, prepare yourself to walk down a path filled with landmines. It won’t take you long to pick a starter who you feel that you are better than, and she will become the target of your scorn.
Listen to me. It is silly and dangerous to be scornful of a teammate who is playing in front of you. Why? Because you don’t decide your playing time and she doesn’t decide hers either. If you’re upset that Jenny is playing in front of you, don’t blame Jenny. She’s just doing her best because she wants the same thing that you want. It’s not her fault. Jenny’s not the idiot who can’t seem to recognize your soccer genius; that idiot is your coach.
When you start dragging teammates into your personal house of misery, you become a cancer to your team and it won’t be long before the coach decides his team is better off without you.
If you want to ignore my advice and make playing time your problem, then at least make sure you contain it as your problem.
