2011 Icebreaker: TSC United wins 3-1 over VLSC East End Wizards

With two long-range, left-footed goals from forward Matthew Bailey, TSC United of Towson (MD) held on for a 3-1 win over VLSC East End Wizards Saturday on the first day of the PWSI Icebreaker Tournament at Howison Field in Woodbridge in U12B Red group play.

Bailey scored a long-range left-footed goal in the first half, but VLSC number two tied the game early in the second half, before Bailey scored his second of the game.

“We started off strong with some pressure attacks,” said TSC United assistant coach Shaun Fleming. “The goalie on their team made some awesome saves throughout the game.”

He added that VLSC East End Wizards put TSC United under a lot of pressure, “which opened up some bad habits for us,” Fleming said.

The scored stayed at 2-1 after TSC United’s #9 had a 25-yard shot saved nicely by the VLSC East End Wizards goalkeeper. TSC United’s #17 then scored following a nice buildup. After an initial shot was saved, he took a pass from the endline and calmly slotted the ball into the net.

Bailey later cleared a shot from Wizards’ #2 off the goal line.

“They were aggressive, trying to work on passing and possession,” Fleming said, adding that “there is always room for improvement.”

Fleming said the team has done well so far this spring, having competed in two other tournaments.

“I don’t think they’ve reached the potential that they should be,” Fleming said. “I know that the kids can play better than what they do.”
