Champs crowned at US Youth Soccer Southern Regional Championships

BATON ROUGE, La. (June 27, 2019) — The 2019 US Youth Soccer Southern Regional Championships came to an exciting conclusion on Sunday in Baton Rouge, La., as 13 teams were crowned champions to complete all 14 final matches.

Not only did those sides step off the Burbank Soccer Park fields as Regional Champions, but they also secured berths to the 2019 US Youth Soccer National Championships, which will be held July 22-28 at the Overland Park Soccer Complex in Overland Park, Kan.

North Texas led the way with five Southern Regional Champions, while Florida, Georgia and North Carolina each had two. Louisiana, Oklahoma and Tennessee round off the list with one champion each.

Highlights from Thursday:

13U Boys
FC Dallas 06 Premier (TX-N) defeated ASCES CES Breakers FC (FL), 2-1, to claim the 13U Boys Southern Regional Championship. After a scoreless first half between the two sides, FC Dallas got on the board early in the second half. Michlyn Murphy – whose goal tied him for top scorer in his age group with five goals – scored in the 47th minute to give Dallas the lead. Dallas kept on the pressure and doubled its advantage just three minutes later thanks to Ashton Medina. ASCES pushed for a comeback, and pulled one back in the 67th minute, when David Serra found the back of the net, but the Florida side could not find an equalizer before the final whistle. Dallas will join the three other 13U Boys Regional Champions at Nationals.

13U Girls
06 CSA South Elite (NC) made it six straight wins as it claimed the 13U girls title with a, 2-0, victory over TSC (TN). Gabriela Vatrano scored her fourth goal of the event to give the North Carolina the side the lead seven minutes before the end of the first half. CSA didn’t wait to add to its advantage as a goal from Jaida McGrew made it 2-0 just three minutes into the second half. A CSA defense, who had only allowed three goals up until the final, kept the clean-sheet to secure the 13U Girls title.

14U Boys
05 PGSA Stars (NC) claimed the 14U Boys Southern Regional title after its, 3-0, victory over SCUFC 05 Boys (SC). The North Carolina side used two first half goals, to take a, 2-0, lead heading into the half. Thomas Lowrygot PGSA start on the right foot when he pushed his team ahead with a goal in just the fourth minute and then Ryan Davis added a goal of his own in the 21st minute to increase the lead. SCUFC couldn’t find an equalizer and Davis shut the door in the 63rd minute when he added his second goal of the game to bring the final score to 3-0.

14U Girls
Defending Regional Champions, D’Feeters 05 Black (TX-), secured its second-straight Southern Regional title with a, 5-1, victory over LA Fire 05 Red (LA). After holding off the champions most of the first half, the floodgates opened just before 30-minutes had elapsed. Delmy Benetizadded two goals before the first half whistle with strikes in the 27th and 35th minutes to give D’Feeter’s a, 2-0, lead headed into the half. The North Texas side increased its lead in the second half starting with a goal from Saiya Patel before Benitez completed her hat trick in the 51st minute. Bailey Malone scored the final goal for D’Feeters but LA Fire kept fighting until the end and spoiled the clean sheet as Chloe Burst added a goal bringing the final score to 5-1. Despite the loss, LA Fire heads to the National Championships as Regional Representatives with D’Feeters having already qualified through the US Youth Soccer National League.

15U Boys
PPA KSA 04 Pro-Profile (GA) defeated the defending regional champions, VHSC Steamers 04 Black (AL), 4-0, to secure itself a spot in the 2019 National Championships. After a hard fought, scoreless first half, KSA went off with a flurry of goals at the end of the second half to secure the title. Alphonso Mori got KSA on the board in the 70th minute, which completely opened up the game as VHSC started investing numbers forward in-order to come back. Emanuel Michael made it 2-0, after scooping a shot up and over the keeper on a 1v1 breakaway. Alexander Lee extended the lead just five minutes later as he hit a strike into the upper-ninety to make it 3-0. Michael added another goal before the final whistle to make it 4-0 and stretched his age group leading goal scoring tally to eight.

15U Girls
In an all Georgia final, GA Rush earned a, 2-0, victory over CFC Redstar 04 Elite (GA) to earn its fifth straight win. Chloe Lynch scored an early eighth minute goal to give Georgia Rush a, 1-0 lead. Jordynn Dudleyscored her ninth goal of the event, in the 67th minute, to give Rush a 2-0 lead. The Rush defense, which has allowed just two goals all event, locked down the defensive third to secure its fourth clean-sheet of the event and the Southern Regional title.

16U Boys
The two top scoring teams in the 16U Boys age groups met in the final with FC Dallas 03 Premier (TX-N) earning a, 3-0, victory over OK Energy FC Central 03 (OK). After its tight win over KSA in yesterday’s semifinal, FC Dallas locked down its defense while keeping its offensive pumping to secure the win. After a scoreless first half, FC Dallas’ Braden Shueybroke the deadlock in the 52nd minute. FC Dallas kept the pressure on and notched another goal four minutes later, thanks to Joel Hernandez, to double the advantage. Timothy Ospina, added a late insurance goal for FC Dallas as it secured a, 3-0, victory and its spot in the 2019 National Championships.

16U Girls
After getting eliminated in last year’s quarterfinals, Sunrise Sting 2003 X1 (FL) came into the event on a mission and achieved it with a, 4-0, victory over Dallas Texans 03 (TX-N). Sunrise set the pace of the game as it earned a goal in just the seventh minute of play, putting Dallas on its heels. Guilianna Johnston doubled Sunrises’ advantage in the 43rd minute to expand the lead and Megan Morgan added to that making it 3-0 in the 56th minute. Sunrise kept the foot on the gas pedal until the final whistle, scoring in the last minute of play as Johnston notched her second goal of the game. With the win, Sunrise earns a big rematch victory after an earlier, 5-3, loss to Texans in group play, plus a spot in the 2019 National Championships.

17U Boys
OK Energy FC Central (OK) ran away with the 17U Boys final with a, 6-1, win over Coral Estates Strikers Blue (FL). After two close one-goal knock out round wins, Coral Estates could not grind out another victory. OK Energy’s Jose Estrada-Capilla scored a hat trick with teammates Abraham Covarrubias, Edson Trejo and Dawid Livingstone Kisanga rounding out the goal scoring. However, OK Energy was not able to keep the clean-sheet as Emiliano Sosa found the back of the net for Coral Estates. Despite the loss, Coral Estates will continue on to Nationals as OK Energy has already qualified via the National League. The Oklahoma side will go into Nationals confident, holding both a National League and Southern Regional title.

17U Girls
Team Boca 2002 (FL) flexed its scoring and defensive abilities throughout the event and used them both in tandem to defeat the defending champions, Sparta FC 02 Elite (TX-N), 2-0. A lone goal in each half from Jade Euell, plus a fifth clean-sheet in six games, guided the Florida side to victory. Euell’s first goal came in the first ten minutes and then she added to her age group leading goal scorer tally – eight goals – in the 52nd minute to make it 2-0. The defense did its job, keeping Sparta’s tough attack at bay to help Boca book a spot to Nationals.

18U Boys
FC Dallas 01 Premier (TX-N) earned a second straight overtime win, this time a, 3-1, victory over Oklahoma Energy FC Central 01 (OK), to win the 18U Boys title. Dallas controlled the game early but Energy battled back and had some great chances in the first half. Energy’s Gabriel Ontiverosput Dallas on high alert, giving Oklahoma the lead in the 64th minute. Energy looked to have the game in the bag, but Dallas, and age group leading goal scorer, Joe Perryman, put a goal away at the back post deep into added time to send the game into overtime. FC Dallas made the most of its second chance, as Perryman put FC Dallas on the front-foot in the 96th minute and then Orlando Castro finished the scoring in the 105th minute.

18U Girls
01 Lady Lobos Rush Premier (TN) defeated Coral Gables Storm 2001 Black (FL), 3-0, to book its ticket to the National Championships. The two teams played to a scoreless first half before Cambell Kivisto gave Lobos the lead midway through the second half. Lobos’ Cara Young doubled the Tennessee side’s lead in the 75th minute to make a late comeback a bit more daunting. Elizabeth Slavinsky added her fourth goal of the event in the 85th minute to all but seal the deal for Lobos. Coral Gables could not produce any comeback magic, and Lobos becomes the new18U Girls Southern Regional Champions.

19U Girls
It took overtime to decide the 19U Girls final as Cajun SC Rage 18/19 Academy (LA) defeated 00 CSA Charlotte King (NC). Cajun got the scoring started in the ninth minute when Madeline Moreau found the back of the net. CSA battled its way back and the teams when into halftime level thanks to a finish from Isabelle Wood. CSA took the lead two minutes into the second half with a goal from Skyler Walk but Rammie Noelleveled the score in the 56th minute. No team could find a winning goal in regulation and the game headed to overtime. Cajun pulled away in overtime as Noel scored her second – and age group leading eleventh – goal of the match. Emma Young added a late insurance goal as Cajun pulled away to seal its spot in the National Championships.

The US Youth Soccer National Championships will consist of US Youth Soccer Regional Champions in the 13U through 19U Boys and Girls age groups, as well as the US Youth Soccer National League qualifiers in the 14U through 19U Boys and Girls age groups to complete the field of 104 teams.
