Charlotte FC Academy program announces Brian Edwards as goalkeeper coach

CHARLOTTE — Brian Edwards has been appointed as goalkeeper coach for Charlotte FC’s Academy, the club announced on Thursday.

Edwards, whose playing career included stints in Major League Soccer and Europe, boasts a proven track record of success in both individual and team-oriented coaching initiatives.

“We are excited to have Brian join our staff as Academy Goalkeeper Coach,” says Charlotte FC Academy Manager Dan Lock. “He brings a tremendous wealth of experience from playing in MLS, internationally and professionally in Sweden, and as a national champion with Wake Forest in the college game.

“He also has great knowledge of the local market through his coaching role with UNC Charlotte. Brian will be a big asset to our Academy and the players will benefit from his expertise and experience.”

Edwards serves as Assistant Men’s Coach at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, which has won multiple titles during his six-season tenure. He will continue to perform this role concurrently with his Charlotte FC duties.

“I remember tracking Brian as a player from his National Title at Wake Forest and through the MLS draft,” says Charlotte FC Technical Director Marc Nicholls. “As a player, he was also called into the USA squad as they prepared for the 2010 World Cup. We are fortunate to have such experience on our doorstep. Brian possesses a drive and dedication to the development of truly elite level goalkeeping.”

Edwards’ coaching experience also entails a season as Assistant Soccer Coach at Hofstra University, and a role as Coaching Director with the Carolina Rapids.

“I’d like to thank Marc and Dan for the opportunity to work in the most elite environment our country has to offer within the youth setup,” says Edwards. “As a part of the technical staff I look forward to driving the goalkeeper position forward and supporting the young players on their journey in the game.”
