College of Charleston welcoming nine recruits from the U.S. and abroad

CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston men’s soccer head coach Keith Wiggans has announced the signing of nine newcomers for the 2023 season.

Matt Lenert | F | Falls Church, VA George C. Marshall HS

Lenert was named team MVP, first-team All-Liberty District, and All-Northern Region during his junior and senior seasons. Additionally, he was selected to the All-Washington Metropolitan squad during his senior year after an honorable mention his junior year. He scored 32 of his 38 career goals in his final two seasons.

Wiggans on Lenert: “Matt is a dangerous attacking player who can score on all surfaces.  He has the physical attributes and talent to make an impact right away.  I am excited to see him put in an environment that challenges him every day.”

Charlie Duske | GK | Leawood, KS | Shawnee Mission East

Duske was awarded All-Metro, all-league, and all-state first team as a junior and senior. In addition, he was selected as the team MVP and received the Team Spirit award during his senior season. Duske recorded 19 shutouts over his junior and senior campaigns. In his junior season, he helped the team go 24-8-7 and win the regional title then, advance to the state quarterfinals.

Wiggans on Duske: “Charlie is a goalkeeper who has a large presence.  His size and communication are recognized immediately but he also moves very well and can collect serves and get down to make big saves.  His commitment to his growth is exactly what our goalkeeper core needs.”

Hogan Walker | MF | Nashville, TN | Montgomery Bell Academy

Walker earned all-state team twice and was a part of the All-South team. To add, he was selected as a district MVP when he scored 16 goals and 12 assists in his senior campaign. Walker also helped his team win the state title and scored both goals in the quarterfinals.

Wiggans on Walker: “He is a very technical central midfielder who can distribute very well.  His range of passing is top level, and I am excited to see his growth as a player.”

Ezequiel Emanuele Goetzke | MF | Samborondon, Ecuador | Unidad Educative Bilingue Torremar

Goetzke was voted the best player on his team and earned the Gold Medalist in athleticism. Additionally, he led his team in goals and assisted his team to victory in the Interscholar Intermediate League Championship.

Wiggans on Emanuele: “Leki is an experienced central midfielder who has been playing at a high level. He is skillful and can affect the game in and out of possession.”

Fili Asfha | MF | Birmingham, England | Sandwell Academy

Asfha played for Sheffield Wednesday during the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons.

Wiggans on Asfha: “Fili comes to us from a high-level club.  He has been controlling their midfield with his technical ability and his ball-winning skills. Those skills combined with his work rate and physical abilities made him college ready.”

Ethan Garvey | D | New Orleans, LA | Holy Cross (Evansville)

Garvey is a graduate transfer and started all 19 games as a senior at Evansville. In his last year, he was named All-West Region third team. Additionally, he was chosen to be a part of the Missouri Valley Conference all-freshman squad in 2019.

Wiggans on Garvey: “At 6’7, Ethan has a strong presence on the back line. He was a United Soccer Coaches All-Region player in 2022 at Evansville and comes in with over 5000 minutes of experience.  He will look to strengthen our talented back line.”

Samuel Bass | MF | Charlotte, NC | Myers Park (Washington and Lee)

Bass is a graduate transfer from Washington and Lee where he started 74 games, scored 28 goals, and recorded 26 assists for a total of 82 points. He was a two-time United Soccer Coaches and D3soccer.com All-Academic team recipient. Bass also was named All-ODAC all four years including three first-team selections. In 2021 and 2022, he was awarded the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-American.

Wiggans on Bass: “Sam is a two-time All-American joining us from Washington and Lee.  He is an experienced attacking player who has scored and assisted throughout his whole career. Additionally, he has helped his teams advance in three separate National tournaments.  He will look to strengthen our young, talented group of attackers.”

Eric Wnorowski | GK | Wall Township, NJ | Christian Brothers (Vassar)

Wnorowski comes to Charleston from Vassar where he was a finalist for the Scholar-Athlete Award and Matthew Vassar Outstanding Career Award. He was chosen to be a part of the All-Liberty League first team as a junior and second team in his senior year. Wnorowski earned the Liberty League Academic team three times. Additionally, set a school record in GAA and ranked third in wins, fourth in shutouts, sixth in save percentage, and ninth in saves. He also helped his team go undefeated in conference play and reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.

Wiggans on Wnorowski: “Erik is a two-time All-Conference player from Vassar College.  He has started and played almost every minute between the pipes for Vassar during his career. He is a goalkeeper who reads the game very well with his sharp decision-making and athletic ability; this makes him very talented.

Zach Shunnarah | D | Birmingham, Ala. | Mountain Brook (Sewanee)

Shunnarah is a graduate transfer from Sewanee where he was named United Soccer Coaches All-Region and All-America teams last season. He was selected as the school’s Male Athlete of the Year and Sewanee Athletics Award for Scholarship and Leadership in Sports. Additionally, he earned the South Athletic Association first team and all-tournament team. Shunnarah captained the Sewanee team which was ranked in the top 10 in the nation.

Wiggans on Shunnarah: “Zach is a 2022 All-American joining us from Sewanee University.  He anchored a team that only gave up eight goals in 17 games last season.  He is technically sound, good in the air, and solid in his 1-on-1 challenges.  Additionally, he brings great leadership to the program.”
