Florida State’s Mark Krikorian named NCAA Women’s National Coach of the Year
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Via Florida State – The awards continue to mount for the national champion Florida State women’s soccer team as Mark Krikorian was named National Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
Krikorian led the Seminoles to a school-record 24-win season, the program’s first national title and their third Atlantic Coast Conference championship in the last four years.
The Seminole head coach saw his team go on quite a run down the stretch closing out the 2014 campaign with 10 straight victories and a school-record 21-game (20-0-1) unbeaten streak.
Florida State was also pretty tough to score on during the ladder part of the season giving up only one goal during its 10-match win streak and just three goals over the last 18 matches. The Seminoles did not allow a single goal during the NCAA Tournament becoming just the second school to perform the feat over a six-game postseason run in NCAA history.
In the NCAA Tournament, Krikorian and the Seminoles defeated four-ranked opponents including a pair of wins over top-five teams at the College Cup in Boca Raton. Florida State put the finishing touches on an amazing season with a 1-0 victory over Virginia in the finals for FSU’s third win over UVa in 2014 and the school’s first national championship.
The national honor from the NSCAA is the first for Krikorian at the Division I level and third of his career as he was named the Division II National Coach of the Year in 1992 and 1995.
In 10 seasons at Florida State, Krikorian has amassed 193 victories including 40 in the postseason. Krikorian has led the Seminoles to the Elite Eight every year since he arrived on campus in 2005, seven College Cup appearances, three national title games, three ACC championships and three regular season league title. He has registered at least 16 wins in all 10 seasons at Florida State while the Seminoles are the only school in the country to finish ranked in the top 10 of the final NSCAA poll over the last 10 years.
Krikorian was also recognized as the 2014 NSCAA Southeast Region Coach of the Year for the second time in the last three years. He has been honored as a Division I regional coach of the year by the NSCAA a total of four times (1997, 2005, 2012 & 2014).
