Dallas Cup XXXVI champions crowned on Sunday

(Via Dallas Cup) – The Dr Pepper Dallas Cup concluded today as Coritiba from Brazil defeated Monterrey of Mexico in the Gordon Jago Super Group Final, 3-1. The contest was the final game of Dr Pepper Dallas Cup XXXVI’s “Championship Weekend”, in which eight teams, representing four countries, were awarded Dallas Cup’s iconic “Boot and Ball” championship trophy.

Gordon Jago Super Group

In an exciting game worthy of deciding the Gordon Jago Super Group Final, both Coritiba and Monterrey showed fantastic on-the-ball skill which produced numerous scoring chances, and great goals. Coritiba struck first in the 8th minute, when Forward Thiago Lopes received a cross in the penalty area.  Instead of trying to get off a difficult shot, Lopes laid off a beautiful ball onto the path of an onrushing Evandro da Silva, who blasted his shot past the Monterrey goalkeeper.

Monterrey responded in the 26th minute, when Erick Amaro beat the Coritiba goalkeeper to the ball on a corner kick, and flicked the ball into the net to tie the score.

Coritiba quickly responded when Lopes and da Silva teamed up again, this time on a free kick which da Silva headed home for the 2-1 lead.

Both teams continued to dazzle the boisterous crowd with entertaining soccer.  In the 68th minute Coritiba midfielder, Vitor Vieira, played a quick give-and-go with a teammate to give himself space in Monterrey’s half of the field.  While his long-distance shot was not strong, it was perfectly placed, and rolled in just inside the near post.

With less than 10 minutes remaining, Coritiba lost a player to yellow card accumulation, and defended with 10 men for the remaining portion of the game. Monterrey had several excellent chances, but was unable to score again, giving Coritiba its second Gordon Jago Super Group championship in four years.  The win is the twelfth Super Group championship by a Brazilian club since the elite division was founded in 1990.

Daniel Lopez (R) celebrates is last-minute game winning goal against FC Dallas

Under 19

Jaguares de Chiapas denied FC Dallas their second Dr Pepper Dallas Cup XXXVI Championship of the day, in heart-breaking fashion.

FC Dallas 97B Premier struck first in the 13th minute, when FC Dallas’ Christopher Villalobos was able to connect on a sharp cross into the goal box, and flick it past the goalkeeper.

Jaguares controlled the pace of the game for long stretches, but FC Dallas still created several chances on the counter-attack, and was unlucky on several occasions not to increase their lead.  The missed opportunities came back to haunt them in the 77th minute when Jaguares’ Ricardo Gonzalez headed home a cross to tie the game at 1-1.  FC Dallas had a chance to re-take the lead one minute later when a shot beat the keeper, but hit the inside of the far post, and bounced back harmlessly into the field of play.

The game seemed destined to go to a deserving overtime, when, in the fifth minute of added-time, and on the last meaningful kick of the game, Daniel Lopez made a long run from midfield and uncorked a blistering left-footed shot, that flew past the FC Dallas keeper, and into the side netting for the winning goal.  The 2-1 victory gave Jaguares their first Dallas Cup championship and denied FC Dallas Premier Head Coach, Scott Dymond, his second championship of the day.

Super 17’s

The Super 17’s championship game featured two Mexican rivals, Monterrey Rayados and Santos Laguna.  Monterrey came into the match having won the most Dallas Cup championships, with fifteen, while Santos was seeking their first.

Santos kept the ball for long periods of play in the scoreless first half, creating several quality chances.  Monterrey used quick counter-attacks to provide their offense for most of the game.

In the 76th minute Santos’ Jesus Ocejo Zazueta rose above his defender to head home the game’s only goal, and give Santos their first “Boot and Ball” trophy.

Golden State’s shot bounces off the cross bar

Under 17

The Under 17 Championship was a fitting pairing, in that the two most successful clubs in this year’s tournament met for the right to hoist the “Boot and Ball” trophy.  FC Dallas sent three teams to the finals Dr Pepper Dallas Cup XXXVI, while FC Golden State sent two.

A vocal crowd, rose early for the game that kicked off at 10:00am. The crowd exchange chants as FC Dallas Premier fans shouted “F-C-DAL-LAS”, and Golden State Platinum supporters chimed in with “Ole’s” for each pass in extended possessions.

It was FC Dallas that rewarded its fans in the 28th minute when Gerver Chavez connected on a lofted ball over the top of Golden State’s back line, slotting the ball calmly past the onrushing keeper for the first goal of the game.

Golden State thought they had tied the score when a shot beat the FC Dallas keeper, but bounced down off the crossbar and harmlessly away from goal.  Just a minute later Golden State was reduced to 10 men when a player received his second yellow of the game.

With time running out, another Golden State player was ejected for a violent conduct foul.  FC Dallas’ Martin Gonzalez, sealed the win a minute late with a 89th minute strike.

The victory gave FC Dallas their third Dallas Cup Championship, the second one claimed by Head Coach Scott Dymond.

The following games were played Saturday, April 4.

Under 16

It was two Washington club rivals, Seattle United Copa and Crossfire Premier Pre-Academy, who had their eyes on the U16 adidas Young Champions title in Saturday’s U-16 final matchup.

Seattle United’s captain, Jackson Ragen, struck first in the 12th minute.  Ragen was able to squeak the ball past Crossfire’s goalkeeper, when he rose above his defender to nod in a hopeful cross.

Paul Rothrock padded the score in the 38th, to give United all the goals they would need, in a 2-0 victory.  Seattle United Copa is the first team from the State of Washington to win a Dallas Cup age group.

Under 15

Eintracht Frankfurt of Germany defeated FC Golden State USSDA U14 Academy, 2-1, to claim the U15 Dr Pepper Dallas Cup XXXVI title.

Enrique Pena Zauner started the German side off right, with his 14th minute, perfectly placed, free kick strike.

William Justin Kabuya added to the lead five minutes into the second half to give his team some needed breathing room, as FC Golden State stormed back in the dying minutes of the game. Kevin Aguilar-Cervantes scored with one minute remaining to put Eintracht on their heels.

In added time, Golden State had a shot at the tying the game, but the last minute desperation header went wide of Frankfurt’s empty goal, for the final play of the game. This is Eintracht Frankfurt’s second Under 15 Dr Pepper Dallas Cup Title, and first since 2010.

Under 14

Penalty kicks were required to decide the Under 14 age group, after AC Brea and FC Dallas Pre Academy tied 1-1 at the end of overtime.

AC Brea Captain, Tye Herandez, scored in the 13th minute, to give his side a 1-0 lead.

FC Dallas tied the game 7 minutes later, when Luis Pacheco redirected a cross past the goalkeeper.

Neither team was able to add to their tally in regulation, which required AC Brea to play in their third consecutive overtime game.

The 20 minute overtime period remained scoreless, meaning the championship would be determined from kicks from the penalty spot. Aaron Tebay, hero in AC Brea’s quarterfinal penalty kicks victory, when he was an injury replacement for AC Brea’s regular keeper, and scorer of the game winning goal in the semifinal overtime win, came up big again in goal.  He connected on his attempt, and stopped two FC Dallas shots to help AC Brea win the shootout, 3-1.

Under 13

San Diego Surf SC Academy Select beat their Southern California rivals, FC Golden State PDA, by a score of 3-1, to take home the club’s first “Boot and Ball” Championship trophy, in the Dr Pepper Dallas Cup XXXVI Under 13 final.

FC Golden State PDA scored first, in the 27 minute, when Juan Cruz’s shot deflected off a defender and into the far side of the net.

The lead did not hold up for long as Surf forward Alfredo Moran slotted his 31st minute shot past the keeper to tie the game.

Moran scored again in the 50th minute to put Surf up 2-1. Zachary McGordon added his team’s third goal when he blasted home a long-range shot with just nine minutes remaining.

Despite several chances late, FC Golden State was unable to score again, giving the San Diego Surf SC their first Dr Pepper Dallas Cup title.
