ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Via Navy) – Senior defender Derek Vogel has been selected as the captain of the Navy men’s soccer team for the 2015 season.

Vogel is a three-time All-Patriot League honoree and a two-time NSCAA All-Region selection. Vogel has the chance to become Navy’s first four-time All-Patriot League player in 2015. He was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year in 2012.

Vogel was voted team captain by the rest of his Navy teammates.

“We have an incredible senior class and any of our seniors could have been chosen as the captain,” said Vogel. “It’s a huge honor that the team chose me and I will lead along with all the rest of the seniors to the best of my ability. I feel that I am extremely blessed to be in the position I am in.”

Under seventh-year head coach Dave Brandt, Vogel and the rest of the men’s soccer team participated in Navy’s first official training session of the preseason Wednesday morning.

“The first session went really well,” said Vogel. “The guys came back in great shape and the ball was flying around. There is always room for improvement though and right now we want to make sure we keep the momentum going throughout the preseason.”

Navy was 11-4-5 overall in 2014 and 6-1-2 in the Patriot League. Navy’s 27 wins over the last two seasons are tied for the most in program history for a two-year period.

Navy will open the 2015 season at West Virginia on August 28 and at No. 23 Penn State on August 30.
