Five seeded teams knocked out of NCAA Men’s D1 tournament

It was a rough Sunday for far more than the five seeded teams that were knocked out of the 2012 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Tournament.

While St. Louis, UCLA, Marquette, Wake Forest and VCU are all done for the season, three of the top four seeds all won by only a single goal. It took a 90th minute goal by Dan Metzger for ACC Champion Maryland to overcome Brown 2-1. Georgetown rode a late 1st half goal by Keegan Rosenberry to a 1-0 win over UNC Charlotte, and UConn had to hold out their 1-0 win over Northeastern even longer after Mamadou Diouf scored the game’s only goal in the 24th minute.

Only top-seeded Notre Dame cruised as their high seeding predicted, winning 3-0 over Michigan State with goals in the 33rd by Harrison Shipp, 44th by Ryan Finley, and the icing in the 80th by Max Lachowecki. The Fighting Irish also proved their depth, with the first two goals coming from substitutes Ship and Finley.

Four of the sixteen games were decided in overtime, with three needing a 2nd OT period – each seeing the unseeded teams past their purported superior rivals. Only Tulsa held serve, winning 1-0 over South Florida on a Omar Mata goal in the 99th. Syracuse downed VCU 3-2, Fairleigh Dickinson sneaked by St. Louis 2-1, and Coastal Carolina shocked Wake Forest with a 2-1 win; setting up three more potential Cinderella Stories. Thankfully, at least these winners were decided without needing the grossly unfair penalty kick shootout.

Defending National Champion and ACC runners-up, North Carolina needed just such a PK shootout luck of the draw when their 0-0 stalemate with UMBC could not be decided after regulation and double overtime. Their first three takers converted, while UMBC manged only two out of five, advancing the Tar Heels on to a round of 16 date with Fairleigh Dickinson next weekend.

All third-round games are scheduled to take place next Sunday, November 25 at the home of the higher seeds. Followed by quarterfinals the following weekend. The semifinals and final will all be played at the 2012 Men’s College Cup in Hoover, Alabama on December 7 and 9.

Following are all the scores and links to full match reports from round 2. (Note our attached graphic as well, where each school’s logo is “sized” according to tournament seeding and then lightened as the teams as they are knocked-out of the tournament.)
