Georgetown captures 2024 BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Championship
BOYDS, Md. – No. 4 seed Georgetown came from behind to defeat No. 2 seed Providence 2-1 Sunday afternoon in the BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Championship Final at Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md. With the win, the Hoyas earn the BIG EAST’s automatic berth into the 2024 NCAA Championship. The NCAA Championship Selection Show is slated for Monday at 1 p.m. ET on NCAA.com. The Friars entered the day No. 16 in the RPI.
Trailing 1-0 at the half, No. 24 Georgetown (11-4-5, 5-2-1 BIG EAST) quickly evened the playing field in the 47th minute, when Zach Zengue connected with Cole Parete for the equalizer.
In the 79th minute, Eric Howard put the game away with the game-winning goal off an assist by Mitchell Baker. The Georgetown defense closed it out to secure the program’s sixth BIG EAST Championship and first since 2021.
In the 16th minute, it was Providence’s Israel Dos Santos Neto that tallied the opening goal of the contest, with a blast off assists by Pearse O’Brien and Diego Batista.
The Hoyas outshot the Friars 11-9 and held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks, while both teams capped the outing with five shots on target. In goal, Tenzing Manske made four saves for Georgetown, while Lukas Burns corralled three saves for Providence (12-5-3, 5-1-2 BE).
Making plays on both ends of the pitch all tournament long, Georgetown’s Max Viera was announced the Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the tournament, while Howard garnered Most Outstanding Defensive Player honors.
