Georgetown men’s soccer signs two more players for 2019

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University Men’s Soccer Head Coach Brian Wiese announced the addition of two players to the 2019 roster on Wednesday. Incoming freshman Owen Varela signed a national letter of intent to play on the Hilltop. Additionally, Siggi Geirsson will join the squad as a graduate transfer from the University of New Hampshire.

“We are excited to close out our recruiting efforts for the 2019 team with the additions of Owen and Siggi,” said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese.  “Owen is someone we’ve known for a long time after he attended our summer camp two summers ago. He is a versatile defender, who most impressed us with his passing ability. Siggi comes to us after finding a great academic fit in our Conflict Resolution graduate program for his fifth year of eligibility. Siggi was a captain for UNH last year, where (Head Coach) Marc Hubbard and his staff have built one of the more impressive programs in the country. Siggi will bring a lot of experience and quality to the heart of our defense on the field, and a lot of leadership influence in our locker room. Both these players will be adding real competition for minutes along our defensive line.”

Varela is from San Leadro, California and attended Bishop O’Dowd High School playing club in the San Jose Earthquakes Academy.  Varela has played internationally at the Busc International Camp in England and the SuperCupNI (formerly Dale Farm Cup) in Northern Ireland.  He also appeared in the BBVA Bancomer International Tournament in Mexico.  The defender appeared in four-consecutive U.S. Soccer Showcases and also played in the Generation adidas Cup in Los Angeles, Dallas and Colorado.

Geirsson is a native of Reykjavik, Iceland who spent the last two years at the University of New Hampshire including serving as captain in 2018.  With the Wildcats, the defender was a Dean’s List student earning honors all three semesters at UNH and was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society.  He was also a member of the America East Conference Commissioners Honor Roll in 2017 and 2018.  Prior to his time in the States, Geirsson attended Oakley College and plays with Fram Reykjavic which is in the Icelandic First Division.  He has played all over Europe appearing in both Spain and England.

At UNH, Geirsson played in 24 career games with 20 starts to his credit.  He has scored one goal and one assist in intercollegiate play.  The Wildcats won the 2018 America East Tournament and earned an NCAA Tournament berth falling to Colgate in the first round.  The previous season, UNH earned an at-large bid advancing to the third round before falling to Indiana 2-1.

Both players will be eligible to play in the fall.  Varela and Geirsson round out the newcomers for 2019 which include a total of six freshmen and two transfers.  The newcomers include forward Will Sands(Rye, N.Y. / Brunswick), defender Daniel Wu (Cary, N.C. / Panther Creek), midfielders Dante Polvara(Pleasantville, N.Y. / Brunswick) and Aidan Rocha (Brookeville, Md. / St. John’s College High School) and goalkeeper Tomas Romero (Cherry Hill, N.J. / YSC Academy).  Additionally, Paul Rothrock (Seattle, Wash. / Lakeside School / Notre Dame) transferred from Notre Dame in January.  The Hoyas will begin fall training in early August.
