GW men’s soccer posts third straight shutout, 2-0, over Longwood

WASHINGTON (Via George Washington University) – Sophomores Oliver Curry and Christian Lawal scored goals 56 seconds apart as the George Washington men’s soccer team extended its win streak to five in a row with a 2-0 victory over Longwood in its non-conference finale on Tuesday afternoon at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.

With its fifth straight win and sixth in the last seven games, GW improves to 7-5-0 overall, its most wins since 2011. The victory marked the Colonials’ third straight shutout, their most consecutive clean sheets since the 2004 squad which won the Atlantic 10 title posted four in a row.

A scoreless first half saw the teams combine for just seven shots. Freshman goalkeeper Thor Arne Höfs made a pair of big saves in the final 10 minutes before the break.

GW broke the scoreless draw in the 65th minute when Curry converted a feed from freshman Alastair Berry on the left side of the box, sending a shot along the ground into the far corner of the net for his first career goal.

Just 56 seconds later, Curry took a pass from junior Sam Summerlin and sent a great serve into the box to Lawal, who headed it into the right side of the net for his career-best fourth goal of the season at the 64:59 mark.

Longwood (5-6-0) did not manage a shot on goal in the second half, and GW took the 2-0 victory.

The Colonials outshot the Lancers, 13-9, in the game, including 10-5 in the second half and held a 7-4 advantage on corner kicks, including 5-0 in the second stanza.

Höfs finished with a pair of saves in his second shutout of the season, while Longwood keeper Carl Carpenter stopped five shots.

The Colonials return to action on Saturday, when they host Atlantic 10 rival Rhode Island at 1 p.m. at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
