Live coverage of day 3 at 2012 Jefferson Cup boys weekend

3:15: When a coach says something like this:

“We only came here with 13 players, and some of the guys that normally start weren’t here. We’ve got a 15-year-old in goal, and he kept us in it the first couple of games. Today I think we tired a little bit at the end, playing against a very, very good team, a big, physical team.”

…It’s usually part of an explanation or excuse as to why his or her team got beat. But those words actually came from David Robertson of Sereno 94 Boys White on Sunday, moments after his team had capped their Jefferson Cup weekend in fine style, shaking off tired legs – and limited numbers – to defeat a hard-nosed Pa. Classics Elite 93 side 3-1 at West Creek.

The victory was actually more comfortable than the score indicates, as it was 3-0 before Classics midfielder Kevin Popplewell scored a fine consolation goal well into the second half. And to his credit, Robertson quickly offered warm praise for his talented bunch, a top Arizona team who made the long journey to Richmond to compete in the U-18 Championship bracket, as well as the tournament itself.

“I can’t fault the boys. Maybe five or ten minutes here or there, we could’ve done better, but that’s being a little bit picky,” he said with a smile, adding that his sought-after squad has now likely earned even more attention from NCAA scouts.

“Most of our boys have got [college scholarship]offers, it’s just a case of them making their minds up. I think maybe after this weekend they may have a few more headaches, a few more decisions. It’s been first-class, as I say – it’s probably the first time a Sereno team has come to the Jefferson Cup and I think it’s been excellent.”

What a weekend for Sereno, who overcame travel nightmares on Thursday and Friday, barely arriving at the West Creek Fields in time for their first game of the tournament, then proceeded to roll to a 3-0 record with nine goals scored and only two conceded.

–

2:45: Tons of final scores are flowing in from the competition’s final day.
