Local youth player Erik Opsahl leaves St. John’s for pro contract with England’s Reading FC

With all the big named Europeans and well known Americans getting all the transfer news in the past few days as another transfer window came to a close, one of the most interesting moves has to be the signing of little-known local youth product and St. John’s University freshmen Erik Opsahl by a major English club.

Reading FC have signed the 18-year old after Opsahl trained with the first team for two weeks, but according to club officials, the short term plans are focused on getting him some time with their youth U18 side and/or the reserve team.

Reading FC’s director of communications Craig Mortimer told Yanks-Abroad.com that his contract runs through the end of the current season, with a team option for an additional year.

Before attending St. John’s, Opsahl played for Pachuca Internationals out of Maryland.
