Louisiana Tech women’s soccer team signs trio of defenders
RUSTON, LA – Louisiana Tech head coach Kevin Sherry added more depth to the back line on Wednesday, with the announcement of three defenders joining the Lady Techsters soccer team.
Bailey Botkin, a native of Pearland, Texas, is a transfer from ULM who will be eligible to play immediately. Carmen Suarez and Laura Ogando, both natives of Spain, will join the program for the fall 2021 season.
“Improving our defensive line has been a priority this year and these three are great additions for that purpose,” said Sherry. “They will be able to come in and contribute from day one which will have an immediate impact.
“Our success has always been built upon a strong defense and so I am excited to see how these players will contribute to our upcoming seasons.”
Botkin was a three-year starter and team captain for the Warhawks. She saw action in 38 games, with 32 starts, while totaling 2,473 minutes on the back line.
“I chose to come to Louisiana Tech because they have a great MBA program, Ruston is a beautiful town and I have always admired their soccer program for their high standards and work ethic,” said Botkin.
At Pearland High School, she lettered in soccer, volleyball, track and cross country. She was a team captain as a junior and senior and was named Defensive MVP, First Team All-District and VYPE Female Player of the Year.
Ogando spent her freshman year at New York Tech where she made 17 starts for the Lions who finished tied for second in the East Coast Conference. She earned ECC Rookie of the Week honors on one occasion.
“I chose LA Tech because I think it is the best place for me to develop in sports, academics and as a person,” said Ogando.
In her home country, she played for Club Deportivo Tacon where she was a member of the U19 Madrid Champions. She was participated with Real Madrid B and Madrid CFF.
Suarez, who will be an incoming freshman, played at the club level for C.D. Femarguin which is part of the 2nd Female Spanish Division. The team recorded a first place finish last season.
