Marta signs new contract with NWSL club Orlando Pride
ORLANDO, Fla. (Oct. 24, 2019) – Orlando Pride and six-time FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year Marta Vieira da Silva have agreed to a new contract ahead of the Club’s fifth National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season. Per team and league policies, terms of the contract were not announced.
“It’s wonderful for the Club and the fans to have Marta, whose career speaks for itself, back with the Pride next season. Marta is effervescent – nothing compares to the experience and passion she brings to our roster and I think this year she showed just how much she gives to this team,” Orlando Pride Head Coach Marc Skinner said. “Everyone knows the quality that she possesses on the field, which we are of course thrilled to have back, but having the leadership and mentoring abilities of the greatest player to play the game will be critical to the continued growth of the Orlando Pride.”
Marta, 33, joined the Pride ahead of its 2017 NWSL season, helping lead the Club to its first-ever playoff appearance that same year. Since joining the Pride, she has solidified herself as the Club’s all-time leader in both goals and assists, with 23 and 10 respectively, through 54 appearances.
Since joining the Pride, Marta – often referred to as the Greatest of All Time (G.O.A.T.) – has been named to the NWSL’s Best XI and Team of the Month, awarded Player of the Month and the Player of the Week, and has earned Goal of the Week four times.
In 2018, the Brazilian international became the lone player, male or female, to earn the title of FIFA World Player of the Year for the sixth time. This past summer at the 2019 edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, she set a record for most career goals by a single player in the World Cup with her 17th, passing Germany’s Miroslav Klose. She also became the first player, of either sex, to score at five World Cup tournaments.
In September, Marta was named to the first-ever FIFA FIFPro Women’s World XI at the annual FIFA The Best Ceremony in Milan, Italy.
