CF Monterrey, Real Oviedo to compete in Dr Pepper Dallas Cup XXXIX
DALLAS, Texas (Via Dallas Cup) – The Dr Pepper Dallas Cup has announced that Mexico’s CF Monterrey and Spain’s Real Oviedo will compete in the Gordon Jago Super Group at Dallas Cup XXXIX.
CF Monterrey has a rich history at the Dallas Cup, winning 16 championship titles across all age groups, the most in the tournament’s history. Despite reaching the Super Group final in 2010, 2015, and 2017, the Mexican side is still seeking their first Super Group title. In the 2017 final, Rayados fell short in what was a heartbreaking defeat to local side FC Dallas. The team featured teenage standout and current Liga MX Best XI midfielder Jonathan Gonzalez, who is now a mainstay on CF Monterrey’s senior team. The senior team is current Copa MX champions and reached the finals of the Liga MX this past season.

Also joining the 2018 Gordon Jago Super Group is Real Oviedo from Spain. Dr Pepper Dallas Cup XXXIX will mark the debut for the Spanish club. Real Oviedo currently sits in first place in the Asturias division of Spain’s U18 Liga Nacional Juvenil, with only one loss in 18 games. Two of Real Oviedo’s esteemed academy products now play for the senior sides of the two Premier League teams competing in this year’s Super Group: Juan Mata (Manchester United) and Santi Cazorla (Arsenal). Real Oviedo looks to become the first Spanish Super Group champions since Real Madrid’s back-to-back titles in 1993 and 1994.
CF Monterrey and Real Oviedo’s addition to the 2018 Gordon Jago Super Group complements what is already a strong top bracket. Premier League powers Manchester United and Arsenal FC, Liga MX champions Tigres, MLS champions Toronto FC, defending Super Group champions FC Dallas, and fledging Brazilian club Red Bull Brasil were previously announced as participants. Dr Pepper Dallas Cup XXXIX will be held from March 25 through April 1, 2018.
