No. 7 Georgetown men defeat DePaul 1-0 on Saturday

WASHINGTON (Via Georgetown University) – The No. 10/7 Georgetown University men’s soccer squad defeated the DePaul University Blue Demons (3-11-0, 2-3-0 BIG EAST), 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Wish Field in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. The Hoyas are currently 9-2-2 on the season and 5-0-0 in BIG EAST Conference play.

Despite Georgetown dominating offensive possession, the game winner didn’t come until the 75th minute of play when senior defender Josh Turnley (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) sent a ball into the box from the left side. The ball bounced around in a scramble in front of the net and hit the foot of junior forward Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) before it went to sophomore midfielder Arun Basuljevic on the right side. Basuljevic buried the shot past DePaul keeper Mack Robinson to make it 1-0.

“Winning on the road in this league is always hard and this game was a good example of that. We played pretty well and at halftime we didn’t have a lot to tell the guys except to continue doing what they were doing and try not to get frustrated,” said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. “It was great for Arun to score because he generated a lot of good chances and just hadn’t finished so it was good to see him stay with it.”

Georgetown controlled the game from the opening whistle as the Blue & Gray had a number of opportunities in the first half. Muyl was especially dangerous forcing Robinson to make a big save in the 18th minute, and again in the 25th minute.

In the 32nd minute, GU had DePaul on its heels as both Muyl and senior forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph) had shots that were blocked as the DePaul defense stood strong to keep it scoreless. Late in the half, Allen would have one more opportunity that was thwarted by Robinson to keep it scoreless at the half.

A flurry of Hoya corner kicks opened the second half as the Blue & Gray had chance after chance. Muyl continued to battle Robinson, looking to sneak one past the keeper, and junior midfielder Bakie Goodman (Sarasota, Fla./Pine View School for the Gifted) added a header that Robinson stopped in the 58th minute.

The difference-maker finally came in the 75th minute, as Basuljevic was able to stymie Robinson giving GU the 1-0 advantage.

From that point on DePaul pushed for the equalizer, but the high-powered Hoya offense continued to fire. Allen and Muyl both forced saves on the next two possessions as Allen was able to sneak through, making Robinson come off of his line for the stop.

The Blue Demons never truly found an opportunity to tie it and Georgetown cruised to the eventual 1-0 victory.

The Hoyas outshot DePaul, 23-5, and took 12 corner kicks to the Blue Demons’ two. Robinson had seven saves in the net despite the loss, while Georgetown freshman goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) was rarely tested but came away with two saves on the afternoon.

With the win, the Hoyas continued a 10-game unbeaten streak. GU has also posted five-consecutive shutouts, not allowing a goal in league play.

Georgetown will continue its road swing with another BIG EAST matchup at St. John’s University on Saturday, October 24 at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network and live stats will also be available through Georgetown’s athletics website.
