Northeastern University hires Jeremy Bonomo to lead men’s soccer program

BOSTON – Director of Athletics and Recreation Jim Madigan announced the hiring of Jeremy Bonomo as the next men’s soccer head coach at Northeastern University.

Bonomo is the eighth head coach in program history and joins the Huskies following nine seasons as the head coach at Green Bay.

“We are thrilled to welcome Jeremy to Northeastern as the next leader of our men’s soccer program,” Madigan said. “A native New Englander, Jeremy has a proven track record of building a program into a perennial contender, culminating this season in a Horizon League title. We are confident that he will positively guide and mentor our student-athletes to help them succeed at the highest levels, both on and off the field.”

Bonomo, a two-time Horizon League Coach of the Year honoree during his nine seasons at Green Bay, guided the Phoenix to its first conference championship title and NCAA tournament appearance in more than a decade during the 2023 season. Green Bay went 10-4-5 last fall, including a 5-2-2 mark in league play, reaching the 10-win plateau for the first time since 2011. The Phoenix earned the No. 2 seed in the Horizon League tournament before knocking off top-seeded Oakland on the road to advance to the NCAA Division I Tournament for the third time in team history.

Bonomo recorded 75 wins during his tenure at Green Bay, reaching the postseason on five occasions including the 2017 Horizon League Regular Season Championship, the first in the history of the program. He also coached 22 all-conference selections, two All-Americans, five conference player of the year winners, six all-region selections, and two top-20 nationally ranked defenses.

Before coming to Green Bay, Bonomo put his recruiting skills on display as the top assistant at Cincinnati, securing six top-100 recruits, five high school All-Americans and one junior college All-American, two state players of the year, and two members of youth national teams. Bonomo played a vital role in developing the 2011 recruiting class for the Bearcats, which was ranked 28th nationally. Additionally, Bonomo was responsible for recruiting six of TopDrawerSoccer.com‘s Top 100 Freshmen throughout his stint at UC.

Three of Bonomo’s recruits inked contracts to play at the next level, two of which were chosen in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft. Emmanuel Appiah was selected by the Colorado Rapids as the 15^th overall pick and John Manga was also picked by the Colorado Rapids as the 63^rd overall selection. In addition, Alejandro Garcia joined the Orlando City B of the United Soccer League.

Prior to his arrival at UC, Bonomo spent three seasons as the head coach at Assumption College. The Greyhounds held a 2-13-2 record before Bonomo’s tenure began, but he finished his stint at Assumption with a 9-6-3 record in 2009 that included a final No. 10 ranking in the NSCAA East Regional Ranking. He developed seven all-conference, two all-region, and one player of the year with the Greyhounds while being named the conference’s Coach of the Year in 2009.

A native of Pelham, N.H., Bonomo played collegiately at New Hampshire College (now Southern New Hampshire University), where he captained the team to three NCAA Tournaments, including two NCAA Quarterfinal appearances and a National Runner-Up in 2002. He graduated with a degree in business before receiving his MBA in 2006.
