Overtime goal lifts Baylor women’s soccer past Georgetown, 2-1, in NCAA Tournament Second Round

The chance to dream for a longer trip in the NCAA Tournament ended for the Georgetown University women’s soccer team on Friday evening in Chapel Hill, N.C., as Baylor scored a goal in the third minute of overtime, lifting the Bears to a 1-0 win over the Hoyas in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Fetzer Field. The Hoyas finish the 2012 season with a 16-4-3 overall record, while Baylor advances to the third round of the NCAA Tournament at 19-1-4.

“It was like the men’s game last week (the BIG EAST Championship game),” Head Coach Dave Nolan said. “It was so close you could just taste it, that’s the disappointing thing.

“It was a great season. The reality is that every team, bar one, loses their last game. I felt we did everything we could this year. We grew as a team as the season went on and we really did some great things. Sometimes you have to give credit to them (Baylor) for closing the game out like we did last week at Virginia Tech. I’m really proud of this team and I hope this inspires everyone to want to do this and go one better next year.”

After a scoreless first half, and another 35 minutes of scoreless play, the Hoyas seemed to ready to punch their ticket to the Sweet 16 when they scored with less than minutes left in regulation.

Sophomore midfielder Daphne Corboz (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills), the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, finished a shot from a difficult angle and sent the ball past Baylor goalkeeper Michelle Kloss at 82:08, giving the Hoyas a 1-0 lead. The play had been set up on passes from sophomore forward Jessica Clinton (Avon, Mass./Thayer Academy) and junior forward Kaitlin Brenn (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville).

“We got the ball and switched it quickly,” Nolan said. “Jessie did some good work and got it to Daphne, who did what she does, she made a good move and finished it quite well.”

The minutes climbed down and Georgetown appeared ready to close it out, but the Bears, who ran their unbeaten streak to 20 games with the win, continued to press.

A shot from Baylor’s Hanna Gilmore was blocked at 87:36 and the Bears’ Larissa Campos took a corner kick at 87:52. In a scramble in the box, Lisa Sliwinski and Gilmore sent the ball to Bri Campos, who took a header that beat Georgetown redshirt freshman goalkeeper Emma Newins (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) at 88:03, tying the game at 1-all.

“At that point, we were thinking if we could see out the clock, but give them credit, they put you under pressure and they are very good on set pieces,” Nolan said. “We cleared a corner, but they got it back in and Emma was screened and there were so many bodies in front of her.”

Newins made a save on a shot from Baylor’s Karlee Summey with eight seconds left in regulation, sending the game to overtime. Just under three minutes into the overtime period, Larissa Campos sent a cross from the near sideline to Dana Larsen, who took a shot from the top of the box, slotted to the center of the goal, to beat Newins and give Baylor the 2-1 win.

The first half was a back and forth contest, with the Hoyas getting chances off three corner kicks, all taken by Corboz. The sophomore had a shot blocked in the ninth minute and then had another saved in the 10th minute. Clinton, a first half sub, had a shot blocked in the 33rd minute.

Baylor out-shot Georgetown, 21-5, and had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Newins made six saves for the Hoyas.

“The game really wasn’t going anywhere,” Nolan said. “They were doing what they do and we did a very good job of handling it. They’re such a physical, pressuring team and constantly in your face and when the ball turns over, you’re on your heels. Credit to them for playing the way they do, we just couldn’t really get it going the way we do.”
