San José State head coach Tina Estrada resigns after 7 years with program

SAN JOSÉ, Calif. – San José State women’s soccer head coach Tina Estrada is stepping away from collegiate coaching to pursue additional career opportunities, announced by Director of Athletics Jeff Konya.

Estrada led the Spartans to the 2022 regular-season and tournament championships en route to being named the Mountain West Coach of the Year.

“Thank you to SJSU, staff, administration, players, parents, alumni, donors, and supporters for everything during my seven years here,” said Estrada. “This was a tough life decision to make, but it’s the right decision for me and my family. I’m proud of all the incredible players that I was fortunate to coach, staff members I worked alongside, and being part of three Mountain West Championships both as an assistant and head coach. I look forward to what’s in store for me in the future and watching this group in the stands next season.”

In her tenure at San José State as an assistant and head coach, Estrada transformed the program into a Mountain West powerhouse, bringing it back to championship-winning form. She made history by becoming the first coach in the program’s history to win both a regular season and a tournament championship in the same year, achieving unprecedented success in her very first season. Her leadership guided the team to new heights, as they became a formidable force in the Mountain West Conference.

Under Estrada’s guidance, the Spartans not only excelled on the field, but also in the classroom. In her first year alone, the women’s soccer team had the highest number of Mountain West Scholar-Athletes, highlighting the academic excellence and discipline instilled by Estrada in her players.

Konya shared his appreciation for Estrada’s impact on the program. “Coach Estrada spent seven years building this program into a winner in the Mountain West, making multiple NCAA tournament appearances. She leaves behind a championship legacy, and her contributions will have a lasting impact on the future of the women’s soccer program. We thank her for everything she has done and wish her the best in her future endeavors.”

SJSU will begin an immediate national search for Coach Estrada’s successor.
