San José State women’s soccer team welcomes 7 Class of 2024 recruits

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Seven incoming freshmen will join the San José State women’s soccer team for the 2024 season: Payton Hoover, Atianna Fuamatu-Ma’afala, Skylinne Avalos, Charlotte Memoly, Sophia Martel, Lillyana Rodriguez, and Cammy Ventura.

Payton Hoover / Forward / Discovery Bay, Calif. / Liberty High School / West Coast SC

• Four-year varsity high school player
• Three-year first-team all-league member
• Team MVP
• Varsity captain
• Four-year girls academy talent ID member
• Led the league in goals and assists
• Why she chose SJSU: “I chose SJSU because on my first visit there it felt like somewhere I belonged; I loved the family-like culture, coach Tina and everyone else I met. I also love the fact that I am close to home and my family. Plus the new facilities were a great bonus!”
• Head Coach Tina Estrada: “Payton is a dynamic, athletic, and aggressive attacker that can score some incredible goals. She has an intense and competitive spirit to be the best. I’m excited to see her immediate impact next year at our program and in our conference.”

Atianna Fuamatu-Ma’afala / Forward / Oahu, Hawaii / Mililani High School

• Started on varsity throughout her high school career (2021-2024)
• Team Captain in her junior and senior year
• All-State First Team (2023)
• OIA Championship Game MVP in her junior year
• Why she chose SJSU: “I chose SJSU because of the culture the soccer program has built and the comfortable environment the school provides.”

Her explosiveness, strength, and speed will add to our squad and be a handful for opponents in the attack. She comes from an incredible sports family and I’m so happy to welcome her to our SJSU family.”

Skylinne Avalos / Goalkeeper / Davis, Calif. / Davis Senior High School / Pleasanton Rage

• Won the Golden Glove Award at the Davis Legacy Showcase
• Did not allow a goal during her junior year
• Led the team to the CIF Section Championships in her senior year
• Served as team captain in her senior year
• Played on the varsity team all four years as a starter

• Why she chose SJSU: “I chose SJSU because I instantly noticed and loved the positive environment the coaches created and how welcoming the girls on the team were. I was also drawn in by the new beautiful athletic facilities and the amazing history of San José State. I am also super excited that I am going to be close to home so my parents will easily be able to attend the matches!”

Charlotte Memoly / Defender / Laguna Hills, Calif. / Santa Margarita High School / So Cal Blues

• Head Coach Tina Estrada: “Charlotte is a great addition to our backline. She is a composed, smart, left-footed player, with midfield experience. She comes from a great family that includes two sisters playing at the D1 level and understands the commitment and dedication it takes to become the best. I’m very much looking forward to adding her to our program.”

Sophia Martel / Forward / Soledad, Calif. / Soledad High School

• All-League MVP and All-League First Team two years in a row
• All-time PCAL leading goal scorer

• Why she chose SJSU: “I chose SJSU because of Tina and the coaching staff, along with the brand-new facilities and location in Silicon Valley. SJSU is also close enough for my parents to watch my home games.”
• Head Coach Tina Estrada: “Sophia is a diamond player coming from the Soledad area. Her high soccer IQ, great technical abilities on the ball, and incredible instincts to goal will be a great addition to our program. We are lucky to have her be part of our program next year.”

Lillyana Rodriguez / Midfielder / Turlock, Calif. / Pitman High School

• Four-year varsity starter
• First-Team All-League all four years
• Led her team to the CCAL title in her sophomore year
• Named the CCAL offensive player of the year in her sophomore year
• Tied the school record for most goals in a season in her junior year
• Top goal scorer in the league in her junior and senior seasons
• Why she chose SJSU: “I chose SJSU for its vibrant campus and the welcoming atmosphere it offers. The coaching staff for the women’s team truly stands out to me, and I love the team chemistry and the consistent support among the players.”
• Head Coach Tina Estrada: “Lilly is a fierce, strong, and powerful player that will add to our attacking group. She is a standout player coming out of Turlock, leader in scoring for her high school, and is playing on one of the best club teams in her age group. I’m looking forward to her elevating to the next level here at our program.”

Cammy Ventura / Midfielder / San Jose, Calif. / Archbishop Mitty High School / De Anza Force

• Selected to the Olympic Development Team and travel roster to the West Regional Championships and earned an invite to train with the U17 Philippines National Team
• Previously played for California Thorns USSDA
• Played for DeAnza Force ECNL
• Lettered four years in Varsity Soccer at Archbishop Mitty High School and started as a freshman
• D1 NorCal State Champion (2024)
• Open Division CCS Champion (2021)
• WCAL Champion (2021)
• National Honor Society 4.2 GPA throughout high school
• Missed her junior year due to an ACL injury
