St. John’s University women’s soccer unveils 5-player recruiting class

St. John’s University head women’s soccer coach Ian Stone announced the signings of five student-athletes for the upcoming season.

Ava Collins, Nicole Gordon, Amanda Mickwee, Nicole Multer, and Frédérique St-Jean comprise the incoming class, which will suit up for the Red Storm beginning in the fall of 2020.

Collins, a native of Auckland, New Zealand, brings international talent to the Red Storm squad. The 5-foot-10 central midfielder saw success at the U19 World Cup Qualifiers in September, netting six goals for the U20 New Zealand Football Ferns.

Collins has garnered a number of accolades over her soccer career including the St. Cuthbert’s College Sports Honorary Colours Award. This is presented to a student-athlete who is a good role model to other students within their sport and the wider college community, displaying characteristics of good sportsmanship and fair play. Collins was also named to the Emerging Talent Programme at St. Cuthbert’s College. In addition to her individual accolades, Collins helped the St. Cuthbert’s soccer program finish second at the Kathy Seaward Tournament in New Zealand. As a result, Collins was named the Kathy Seaward Most Valuable Player.

Gordon, a product of Amityville, N.Y., will play alongside her older sister Samantha Gordon who transferred to St. John’s a season ago. Gordon played four years of varsity soccer at St. Anthony’s, earning the role as team captain of the Friars this past fall. Gordon recorded 19 goals and 14 assists in her senior campaign to help lift the program to the New York State Catholic High School Championship after defeating Kellenberg to win the Friars’ third-straight Catholic High School Activities Association (CHSAA) League Championship.

On the club circuit, Gordon played for SUSA Long Island this past season, netting 15 goals in just 14 games.

Mickwee, a two-year varsity player, hails from Redwood City, Calif., where she attended Saint Francis High School. The St. John’s bound defender helped her team to the Central Coast Section (CCS) Division II Championships in 2018-19. In addition to her success on the pitch, Mickwee was a two-time scholar athlete, earning a spot on the honor roll all four years.

Mickwee is the starting defender for Mountain View Los Altos SC ECNL team. The California native helped her club team reach the ECNL National Playoffs in back-to-back years, one of just 16 teams to qualify based on point total.

Multer is a local product who comes to St. John’s from Islip, N.Y., where she was a two-year varsity starter at Islip High School. During her time with the Buccaneers, her team reached the 2017 County Finals before being named 2018 County Champions the following season. That same year, the Buccaneers were Long Island finalists.

In her most recent season of club ball, Multer helped the SUSA Academy ECNL team reach the 2019 ECNL Finals.

Stone will also be bringing in a highly-decorated defender in St-Jean. Hailing from the city of Saint-Bruno in Quebec, Canada, St-Jean’s long list of accolades is highlighted by 2017-18 Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) Rookie of the Year. The 5-foot-10 defender is also a two-time Division I RSEQ All-Star Team selection, as well as a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Championship (CCAA) All-Star Team honoree.

In 2017, St-Jean and the College of Francais qualified for the CCAA National Championship for the first time in program history after finishing second at the RSEQ Provincial Championship. In 2018, the College of Francais finished second at the RSEQ Provincial Championship before winning the CCAA National Championship. St-Jean and the College of Francais wrapped up the most recent season with a gold medal at the RSEQ Provincial Championship.
