Mia Hamm added to AS Roma Board of Directors
Former U.S. Women’s National Team star forward Mia Hamm has been tabbed to join the Board of Directors for Italian club AS Roma, according to multiple media reports.
Hamm, 42, along with Hall of Fame NHL player and Boston Bruins president Cam Neely and former Disney board member Stanley Gold, will replace Thomas DiBenedetto, the former Roma president, Joe Tacopina and Claudio Fenucci as members of the board. Roma is owned by a group of Boston businessmen led by investor James Palotta. The decisions were announced following a club shareholder meeting on Monday.
Italian journalist Gianluca di Marzio‘s website has reported that Hamm will be in charge of the club’s academy.
Hamm’s illustrious playing career included helping the USWNT to two World Cup titles and two Olympic Gold Medals. She scored 158 goals in 275 caps, the third most in the history of international women’s soccer.
Off the field, Hamm has run The Mia Hamm Foundation since 1999, an organization dedicated to raising funds for families in need of a bone marrow or cord blood transplant. She started the foundation following the death of her brother in 1997 from a rare blood disease called aplastic anemia.
Hamm is widely regarded as the face of women’s soccer in the United States, has endorsement deals with companies such as Nike, Gatorade and Pepsi, and has also worked to advance youth soccer in the U.S. with ECNL and U.S. Youth Soccer.
