U.S. U-16 GNT falls to Mexico U-17 WNT at Tournament of Gradisca
SAN VALENTINO, Italy (Via U.S. Soccer) – The Under-16 Girls’ National Team fell to the Mexico Under-17 Women’s National Team in penalty kicks after drawing 1-1 in regulation to finish fourth in the 1st International Women’s Tournament of Gradisca. The USA and Mexico both finished second in their three-team groups to earn spot in the match for third place in the six-team tournament.
Olivia Wingate staked the USA to a lead in the 22nd minute against the Mexico team that was defeated 2-1 by the USA in the championship game of the 2016 CONCACAF U-17 Women’s Championship on March 13 in Grenada, but Mexico equalized through a penalty kick in the 54th minute and the 80-minute match went straight to PKs.
The USA missed two of its first three kicks, with only Maycee Bell converting, while Mexico made all four to win the shootout.
This age group is in the second year of a two-year cycle before becoming the U-18s and then the U-20s with the goal of playing in the 2020 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup.
